Lots of dissent and controversy as this art was being accepted at a board meeting. One said that no ad agency would ever produce such a thing. Another said that was exactly what he loved about it—the realness. Those who wanted it refused to back down. So here 'tis.

Family portrait: a divorced dad, with his parents and his two kids. Done as a gift to proud grandpa (who was delighted). The red dragon signifies their Welsh heritage.

Random House cover art. The author was a political strategist for Richard Nixon who later had a change of heart and felt America needed to be concerned about the growing inequality of social classes, with Congress and party bosses on the wrong side.

The was probably the first book cover I designed, circa 1979, for crusading journalist Karl Grossman, with whom I collaborated on a number of projects over many years.

Eugene O'Neill, published in the Newsday book review on the playwright's 100th Birthday. Despite tight deadlines, taking time out to study a subject's bio and get inside his character would often yield a deeper and more memorable portrait. This one was accepted for the Society of Illustration annual national exhibit and yearbook. The book review editor bought the original to hang in Newsday's NYC editorial suite.

Five generations of gentlemen from a British family, commissioned by noted author Adrian Mourby (4th from left). I wasn't sure how to approach the job before I noticed a round mahogany table in the trash on a London street. Suddenly the solution was at hand. I ripped it apart and took half the table top up to my studio, cleaned it, sanded it, and went to work: an acrylic underpainting, an overlay of oil glazes. It was a gift for Adrian's pop, the big guy in the centre. Son John, on the right, was my drawing student 2010-2013, and (as you might guess) an unusually interesting character.
