Nymph Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is the second lake you will reach hiking up from the Bear Lake parking lot. I was attracted to the unusual yellow water lily flowers in Nymph Lake and had not seen these before. I learned that Nymph Lake was named after the flowers which reminded someone of water fairies or nymphs. This painting is about the lyrical pattern created by the shapes of the lotus leaves floating on the water and interspersed with the yellow flowers and the stems beneath the water. Adding to the design are reflections of the pines along the shores along with light from the blue sky bouncing off the water's surface. I'm pleased with this analogous color harmony as well.

I'm thrilled to present my newest major oil painting in my National Parks series, Grandview Sunset Grand Canyon National Park. This dramatic artwork is based on photographs we took while watching the sunset from Grandview Point our last evening at Grand Canyon National Park. Views as the colors and shadow patterns shifted across the formations were breathtaking. A monumental silence enveloped the group of people watching the glory of the heavens and the earth. Peace radiated out of the depths of the canyons lifting mere observers into meditation. Surely, if you have not experienced this adventure, you must be drawn to partake.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a stylized landscape painting incorporating intensified hues, symbolic motifs, and dramatic contrasts of light and dark in the composition. This view from the north rim features strong morning sunlight casting sharp surreal shadows across the steep jagged walls. I'm thrilled that my oil painting “Black Canyon of Gunnison, CO” was accepted in the Salmagundi Club New York Non-Member Painting and Sculpture Exhibition.

You may be wondering what steps I use to accomplish a large oil landscape such as Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Here I began by collecting relevant photos of the scene taken on a couple of prior visits. Each of these five views included some aspect that was important to me to express my vision for this piece. Next I drew a colored pencil sketch on paper with dimensions proportional to the 24x30 canvas on which I planned to paint. Here I realized I needed to create background for the right edge behind the primary pine tree. To test my composition and color choices I painted an 8x10 oil study. I decided that one major tree was better for the foreground than two and that my reflections in the lake were too foreshortened and needed to extend further into the foreground.

About Me:
A native of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Ruth earned degrees from the University of Arkansas and from the University of Oklahoma. She studied art in Montana, California, Alabama, and Colorado. She studied oil portraiture with Daniel E. Greene in his North Salem, New York studio. Ruth’s influences include the work of John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Residing in Colorado, Ruth is inspired by the grandeur of the nearby Rocky Mountains. She paints the western landscape in a magical style in which she perceives intensified hues, symbolic motifs and dramatic contrasts in her compositions. Night the Stars Fell on Bents Fort sold in The Russell: Sale to Benefit the C. M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana. Soller’s Cache de Poudre won the premier location...
