Digital painting (NOT A PHOTOGRAPH OR PHOTOMANIP) created using Corel Painter v X in conjunction with a Wacom Touch tablet and stylus. The photo I used as ref was taken in my back yard using my iPhone. I painted it just to see if I could. I think it came out ok.

Digital painting (NOT A PHOTOGRAPH OR PHOTOMANIP) created using Corel Painter vX and a Wacom Touch graphics tablet. Photos were used for ref ONLY. The ref photo for the background was taken by myself on my iPhone. The painting of it took twenty hours and the eagle took roughly the same time.

Awesome!!

Thanks! Sometimes, the combination of two elements in this case the eagle and the background just click. The sky was painted based on a photo I took in my back yard on my iPhone and wasn't originally intended to be used with the eagle.

Very nice, what kind of work is this please?
Owen Bell - Over 30 days ago
It was painted on computer using Corel Painter vX in much the same way I would have painted it years ago using trad media. It is not a manipulated photo. I only use photos as reference material. I start with a line drawing and literally 'color it in', using a number of layers and only two or three brush types. For example, the background, frog and branch are all on separate layers. Even parts of the frog are on their own layers, like the eyes and the rear leg, More complex pieces can have up to 30 or more layers, which are eventually collapsed into one. Working in layers allows a lot more flexibility in adjusting tone, focus and contrast in very specific areas. This took around 3 days to paint, I have a lot of trouble convincing people who haven't actually watched me work, that my work isn't photographs. I hope that clarifies.

I thank you for your explaination. I am a fairly new artist on the block, self taught in watercolor and have had some classes in Oil. I know nothing about painting using technology on the pc. I just love this work you did and the others as well. You are an amazing artist. I can see layers and it looks so creative and has a 3D quality to it. Thanks again. :o)
Owen Bell - Over 30 days ago
Don't be intimidated by the prospect Deborah. Its no more difficult than using trad media, in fact, in may respects, it's a lot easier. You don't need to know the program inside out. I know practically nothing about most of what Painter has to offer, but I can still come up with a pleasing result using just a handful of tools. You just need to get a decent graphics tablet with a pressure sensitive stylus (those made by Wacom are best). Don't try and paint or draw with a mouse. That's not what they were designed for and attempting to do so will give you rsi and the resulting artwork won't be very satisfactory either. Download a 'trial' version of painter and have a play around! Best of luck. O X

I love this darling frog, and better still is how you embrace all the young ones with your knowledge. Mark of a great artist to encourage the spirits of all . I do laugh at your repeatedly saying they are not photos...and I can totally see why! All round great and inspirational artist and artworks Owen!! You are a true blue my friend!!

About Me:
I am professional illustrator with over 35 years experience. Some years ago, I was responsible for revamping Thomas the Tank Engine’s image and for creating all the artwork for the worldwide merchandise, including over 30 books, for Random House (NY) and Heinemann (UK). This work was done under the pseudonym ‘Owain Bell’ and some can still be found on the Net. I worked on this character between the years 1986 and 1996
I have been working exclusively digitally for around 8 years. I work in a ‘photorealistic’ style, using Corel Painter (vX) in conjunction with a Wacom 'Touch' tablet and pressure sensitive stylus. Although my work is often mistaken for photographs, I do not use photographs for anything other than reference. All artwork is painted in the same way as with traditional media....
