I was very fond of Karen Carpenter since I was a young boy. I thought of her as one of the greatest singers and she had a unique, natural beauty. She would have been a great artists model. Her big brown eyes and wide toothy smile always took my breath away. The 30th anniversary of her death is a couple of days away. I was in my early 20s at the time. I'm a tough minded guy, but the thought of her dying like this upset me greatly. Even 30 years later I still get the most awful feeling come over me. Living in a world where the reigning pop divas are Madonna and Lady GaGa makes me feel even worse.
This was done with pastel on paper about a year after Karen's death. Her smile isn't quite right. Pastels are tough to use. I did a small number of pastel drawings in the 1980s and put them away and haven't gone to them since.
