I've worked as a craft employee, been a union steward, a supervisor and a manager. I like to think that I've always been able to look at both sides of the fence. In hindsight, I can see some things that I did right, some things that I could have done better and some issues that I would have addressed much differently. That's the point of this article. What I believe many management and union people fail to understand is that the success of an organization depends to a large degree on both parties being focused on the long term health of the organization. Contracts are the vehicle that guides interaction and maintaining mutual respect requires integrity and credibility from everyone involved. The best managers I've known have been objective and good listeners who are willing to tackle grievance issues quickly and fairly.
