I wrote this blog during the summer of 2011, which I spent teaching English in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Although the blog was intended for a small audience and features mostly informal entries, it demonstrates my abilities writing in this genre and for an online audience. The most recent entry is a nonfiction travel piece I have written since returning to the U.S.

I worked as the copy editor and an editorial board member for the Abilene Christian University student newspaper, The Optimist. In these positions, I copy edited one issue of the magazine each week during the fall of 2010, and I wrote weekly opinion columns, editorials, and news stories. This page I have linked here shows my own articles, but any articles from the fall of 2010 are those that I have copy edited.

I worked as the head editor for Abilene Christian University's student literary magazine, The Shinnery Review. As an annual publication, I gathered submissions from students and, along with an editorial board, selected the pieces for the final magazine. I also designed the current blog site for the magazine. The 2011 issue of The Shinnery Review won second place in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) contest, and this year's magazine will be submitted to the 2012 competition. Both issues include some of my own creative work.

This scholarly nonfiction piece, "Engagement and Advocacy," was completed for an advanced composition course I completed at Abilene Christian University under the direction of Dr. Cole Bennett. This piece combines creative elements with scholarly research to explore current understandings of literacy and how to best empower individuals who are working to become literate.

I wrote and revised these selected poems in the fall of 2010 for a poetry workshop, which I took at Abilene Christian University under the direction of Professor Al Haley, author of "Home Ground: Stories of Two Families" and "The Land and Exotic," which won the John Irving First Novel Prize. Three of these poems were published in literary reviews--Fjords Review and Sphere Literary Review.
