The rich picture seeks to capture a range of emotions, the many different challenging relationships between the actors using the backdrop of a circus. A circus is noisy, there’s lots of confused activity, the performers put on diverse entertainment shows. The dominant issue uncovered from the rich picture is peace. A concept of societal friendship and harmony in the absence of hostility and violence. There is a lack of conflict between some of the actors (police, lawyers, politicians all belonging to the legal system), individual lack of peace or internal conflict (the Indigenous people, the community of Palm Island, politicians), freedom from fear of violence between some actors yet the opposite for others (violence between the police and Indigenous people, between Indigenous people themselves, between White Australia and Indigenous Australia, a certain degree of violence between journalists and the Indigenous people – selective reporting). To define peace within the context of the Joan Maloney case is extremely challenging, we have disrupters of peace and peacemakers.
