I started having a deep interest in Japanese culture, focusing mostly on the native warriors during the Medieval period, the Samurai. Originally, the term means ¨service¨ in Japanese language. Historically, Samurai were military warriors famous for their high level of fighting skills including excellent knowledge of martial arts. Although they employed a great range of various weapons, the sword named ¨Katana¨became their symbol. The way that I made the character was to update the Samurai´s traditional outfit adding some modern stylish accessories, tattoos and piercings to give an urban and cool approach fitted to the 21st century. ¨Old meets New¨

Title: Urban Samurai - When I finished my second academic year, I was eagered for experiencing on new techniques in order to improve my design skills and enrich my creative knowledge. During my holidays, I was constantly being on working mood without loosing any chance of drawing. As I was spending a Saturday evening with my friends, having some drinks and relaxing at a bar next to the beach. I took my sketch book and started doodling. While my friends were having fun, I was enjoying by my own conceiving a mysterious figure on paper. When I went back home, I kept on drawing, giving a final outline of a Samurai. (full drawing can be seen under title ¨Drawings¨) My personal message through this character is hidden on his training shoes highlighting the combination of the old with the new. When ¨Tradition¨ meets ¨Modernism¨.

while I was at college, I was enrolled to the ¨D&AD Student Design Awards¨. The sponsor that I decided to participate with was Mtv. My target audience was mostly young people between 16-25. I decided to create an imaginary music band in which legendary icons from the past would join forces with the idols from the 21st century. my intention was to illustrate music as a concealing weapon to fight for straightforward lyrics and strong beats, leaving the social stereotypes behind. Furthermore, I wanted to encourage my target audience to achieve their goals, even though they should face up with difficulties sometimes. this image aims to awake the demanding youth through innovative aesthetic techniques by depicting music megastars from different eras such as (from right to left) Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Freddy Mercury (Queen), Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones), Daft Punk, Jamiroquai, *** Pistols, Bob Marley, The Prodigy and Snoop Dog.

During the third academic year at university, a compulsory module requests students to research and participate in a design competition. I decided to take part in the D&AD. The brief requirement was to create a front cover illustration, considering a special focus on the main character from one of the following 5 movies: ¨Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy¨, ¨Black Swan¨, ¨Drive¨, ¨Tree of Life¨ & ¨ Super 8¨. The movie ¨Drive¨ played by Ryan Gosling, captured my interest, unfolding my creative skills. The design technique I used was to initially drawn with pencil the character in various body postures. Besides, my major intention was to isolate the picture of his head adding a sense of cartoon element for excellent animanted results (drawing can be seen under title ¨Drawings¨). Once my sketch finished, I transfered it to computer and colored it by using Adobe Illustrator.

In my first year of university, I was briefed about a project called ¨Antonyms¨. As the title clearly defines, the subject was to produce two opposite images that could show the same topic from different angles. Basically, my idea was to depict a `cool´ young person that could be a representative example from the 21st century (right image) comparing aesthetically with his `evil´ alter ego from the future (left image). Since my targeted audience was between 16-27, I enhanced my first character with tatoos and piercings making him approachable by the new generations. On the other hand, the duplicated version was a twisted side of what it is defined as coolness today.
