Work Experience: Executive Editor, The News Service of Florida, Tallahassee, Fla., 2008-2013. http://www.newsserviceflorida.com I supervised a staff of three to five reporters, web designers, clerks and interns, and edited nearly all copy for a successful start-up, online, subscription-based news service covering state government and politics in Florida. I was the inaugural executive editor, and built the product from inception to having thousands of subscribers, including every major newspaper in the state, and several TV and radio stations in addition to industry, law firm and association clients within five years. I also wrote stories, and was the public face of the news service. I had been recruited away from The Associated Press to start the News Service. I stepped down as executive editor in 2013 to work on long term projects for the News Service, and its parent company, Affiliated News Services, on a per-project basis, and to seek other freelance opportunities. The move came in part because I had been wanting to work on longer projects, including a political almanac, but came when it did because of a job opportunity for my wife in Chicago that required a move. Reporter, The Associated Press, Tallahassee, Fla., 1998-2008; Miami, Fla., 1996-1998; Louisville, Ky., 1995-1996. I joined the AP in Louisville in 1995 and after a stint in Miami where I covered everything from the Miami Dolphins to the death of Gianni Versace, I took a job in Tallahassee in the state capital bureau. I had been covering the 1998 campaign of Jeb Bush for governor from Miami and moved to Tallahassee just before he was elected to cover him as governor, along with the Legislature and state agencies. I was the lead writer on election night legislative stories for several years, and I also developed a health care policy beat. I was at ground zero of the 2000 presidential recount, and had one of the first couple of bylines on that global story, an ongoing one for which the AP later received extensive recognition. I covered more hurricanes that I can remember, including chronicling the days and weeks after Hurricane Katrina on the devastated Mississippi Gulf coast. I’ve covered presidential campaigns for the AP, from Bob Dole to Barack Obama, as well as national political conventions, starting with the 2000 GOP convention in Philadelphia, up through most recently the Republican convention in Tampa (for The News Service of Florida), and others in between. Between the stories syndicated by the News Service of Florida and The Associated Press, my byline has appeared in hundreds of newspapers around the globe. Other work: I was a freelance writer and had several internships before going to work for the AP and my work from Washington, D.C., was seen in newspapers from Spokane to Topeka to Galveston to Louisville. I also have worked in radio and have TV on-camera experience. Professional Awards –Pulitzer Committee Special Mention, 2001. The committee that awards the Pulitzer Prize issued a special mention to The Associated Press for its coverage of the 2000 recount, including a 2001 investigation into what happened. I was a part of the team that covered the initial recount story, and the 2001 look-back. –Florida Public Relations Association 2010 Communicator of the Year. Largely in recognition of the success of the start-up News Service of Florida. –Beacon Award I headed an effort by The News Service of Florida to develop a partnership with the Florida Cable Television Association on the website www.capitaldatelineonline.com, and made weekly “talking head” appearances on the site to talk about news in Florida state government.
