As a journalist in periodicals and newspapers, I have sought to write hard news as economically and colorfully as accurately possible, while aspiring to imprint some of my subject's voice (when I am portraying people) in any feature I write about them. This usually helps the round out the feeling of a story, leaving not just a story about a subject's special talent or personal convictions, butr a feel for the person hinself. I also specialize in helping people write down their feelings when they feel unequal to the concept of doing so themselves. Many people who can express themselves seamlessly in speech approach writing a letter with such dread that it becomes paralytic. I have assisted people in finding their voices to write love letters, legal documents, gifts of poetry, succinct and coherent complaints to companies, break-up letters, impassioned and well-reasoned letters to editors, and many other different types of items.. Because it is my client's voice I am seeking to express in these projects, the client owns all rights to the documents when they are finished. I understand and can write in every form from the inverted pyramid to iambic pentameter, and I enjoy the challenge of these different avenues of expression. I also find it enormously rewarding to help someone realize that they knew what they wanted to say all along, they just needed some help to properly express it. I have been a writer, poet, speaker, actor and performer all my life. These callings, while internally joined to the point where they feel like one creative drive inside me, are easily separated in expression. I've heard that those who can speak can't act, and those who can act can't write, and writers make terrible speakers, but it seems to me that each of these avocations gather inside me to help drive all the others. .

Derek co-wrote and performed the award-winning theme song to the popular CBS TV show, "Rules of Engagement." He also wrote and performed "City Girl" a track from his latest album which was chosen for a compilation CD featuring Jack White, Adele, and other top recording artists. http://www.starscrashingcars.com His latest project is Stars Crashing Cars which is the recording and performing moniker for songwriter, vocalist and guitarist Derek Schanche. "Lie To The Sun" is his brand new album filled with an indelible brand of melodic rock that made his previous band, Senor Happy, one of the most frequently licensed bands by network television programs. Derek's heart-on-his-sleeve writing style, passionate vocals and innate ability to craft catchy, instantly memorable pop/rock songs - with plenty of loud guitars - recalls the best of Alex Chilton, Paul Westerberg, Jeff Tweedy and Elliot Smith, among others. Derek also owns http://westcoastguitarlessons.com and gives private lessons.
