I've condensed some 20 books for Reader's Digest Canada, and I know how to get rid of material that doesn't push the story forward. I cut books from an average of 75,000 words to 5,000 words, the length Canadian Reader's Digest stipulated for its book sections at the back of the magazine. I got no complaints from authors, and some were astonished that I could keep the gist of the story while cutting so much from the original. I also worked with dozens of writers on story ideas and revisions during 20 years at Reader's Digest magazine, and I have been a writer myself. If you want someone who can tell quality from fluff, and guide you accordingly, please contact me. My CV is pasted below: Ron W. Starr Montreal, Quebec EXPERIENCE July ’06 to Aug. ’09 Freelance editor, Montreal After retiring in June 2006, I worked on contract for Reader’s Digest magazine, condensing books and editing articles. When I saw this vacancy I had renewed zest for words that inspire and motivate readers. I am the best for this job because I am not attending classes and that makes me available full-time for this internship. Someone else might have to juggle a hectic schedule or cave under the pressure of doing it all. I read on a daily basis and editing is a fascinating aspect of creative writing. As a writer it is necessary to become an author.

My curiosity has pushed me to wander to 47 of 50 states in the U.S., Bali, Canada, Mexico and the Cayman Islands while catching every freaking concert you can imagine from the Grateful Dead to GWAR. In addition to advertisements for companies such as Goodwill Industries, my work can be seen in a variety of publications and media outlets such as Skin and Ink Magazine, HBO's original series, ABC 15, Enlightened, The Phoenix New Times, The East Valley Tribune, The Arizona Daily Wildcat, SLAM Magazine, Tempe Starving Artist Magazine and several books depicting the growing sport of rollerderby.

I am currently the editor of la demur magazine and finishing up ghost writing for another client. I have been a writer all my life but it really took off when I won an essay contest required by all seniors in my high school called "What Memorial Day Means to Me". Out of 200 entries, I won first place and moved from poetry to essay writing. I majored in Communications in college with a concentration in writing and had a 3.4 GPA in my major. I became an amateur photographer after I had my first child but have really built on that and become highly proficient at it. I also run my own business making jewelry which has become quite popular. I also set up and wrote all the blog entries for www.everydaycouponing.com. I have started writing my first book and am taking it slow utilizing writing conferences, writing classes and books on writing. I have a library of writing books that would make your chin drop.
