I was born and raised in the United Kingdom and have lived in Houston for the past four years. Since moving here, I have not really explored or pursued my degree. I earned a Bachelors with honors in Drama, film and television in 2009 from Brunel University. Back in England I would teach acting workshops and volunteer to help in our local shows. I am very interested in the career path of voice overs and think my British accent along with my slight Texas twang would have a unique benefit for an original sound.

An alternative fuel vehicle is a vehicle that runs on at least one alternative fuel it not duel fueled (can run on more than one alternate fuel.) Alternative fuels consist of propane, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, Methanol, Ethanol, and Biodiesel. (Alternative Fuel Types, 2000), (Alternative and Advanced Vehicles), & (Gable) Alternative Fuels Propane: also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG; least used alternative fuel ;) ranks 3rd most common vehicle fuel; because of how clean propane burns, an engine that runs on this alternative fuel will have less maintenance costs and have a longer service life. Types of vehicles that run on LPG: there are conversion kits that change gas run vehicles into propane run vehicles; not available ‘ready-made” at the local car dealer but might be order-able. (Gable C. a.) & (Alternative Fuel Types, 2000) Compressed Natural Gas: (CNG) least expensive alternative fuel; CNG costs stay pretty steady (one user stated that in the peak gas prices of 1996 user was paying half what gasoline cost ;) reduces emissions; extremely easy on the engine resulting in less maintenance costs. Types of vehicles that run on CNG: known as “The cleanest internal-combustion vehicle on Earth” is the Honda Civic GX; only vehicle available at this time however there are conversion kits available. (Alternative Fuel Types, 2000) & (Gable C. a., Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) Available) Liquefied Natural Gas: known as LGN; creates low emissions; comes from the same source as CNG; low temperatures cause it to liquify and is best run with delivery trucks so that it doesn’t warm up and boil off too fast. Types of vehicles that run off of LGN: pretty much everything that CNG can run; conversion kits are available; better off in vehicles that don’t heat up too much (i.e. stop and go vehicles.) (Alternative Fuel Types, 2000) Methanol: not a well used fuel source at this time as it is still in the research and development stages. Made from natural gas mostly but can also be made by fermenting plant and animal waste. It is more cost effective to transport natural gas as methanol because it doesn’t need special piping or temperatures as methanol stays liquid at regular temperatures. Referred to as “M85” because right now it is sold blended at 85% methanol with 15% unleaded premium gas. There are possible water contamination issues that are being looked into at this time as well. (Alternative Fuel Types, 2000) Ethanol: known as grain alcohol, can be made with fermenting plant (mainly corn) and animal waste; considered a renewable resource; referred to as E85 because it is usually blended as 85% ethanol and 15% unleaded gas; does not add to global warming; mostly sold in the Midwest where the crops are grown for this fuel, but the prices are higher as they continue to develop this fuel source by finding more ways to create the fuel (not just using the “squeezin’s” but the whole cob of corn for example.) (Alternative Fuel Types, 2000) Types of vehicles that run on E85: all makes and models (too many to list) sell cars that run on this blend. For a detailed list, see the following link: http://www.e85fuel.com/flexible-fuel-vehicles/ Biodiesel: “biodiesel is to petroleum diesel fuel what E85 is to gasoline”; made from fermenting plant and animal waste; adds nothing to global warming and is renewable; generally soybean or canola oil is the base but animal fat or recycled cooking oil have been used as well for the base; referred to as B20 due to this type of fuel being 20% biodiesel mixed with 80% petroleum diesel. This type of alternative fuel is not used much yet due the cost of it however, Nebraska has soybean run buses! Diesel vehicles could use this will very little change. (Alternative Fuel Types, 2000) & (Hess) Author’s thoughts on Alternative fuels and Alternative fuel vehicles I would definitely think of purchasing an alternative fuel vehicle in the future! However, economics do not allow for it at this time. At this point, I do not drive more than 5 miles a day round trip to work and home so the cost savings wouldn’t be as much for me as for another individual due to lack of demand on a vehicle in my family. I actually drive a 4 speed 1985 Toyota pickup truck with 283,000 miles on it and he is still running very good!! I think the reasons that alternative fuel vehicles are not being used as widely as they should is because of the costs to either convert their vehicle which entails finding someone who knows how to do it and do it right for the right price! Before doing the conversion, some research needs to be put into finding stations around your area that offer this type of fuel you are converting to, what the cost would be, and how much would be saved through fuel prices. Most people do not want to put that much effort into anything as our society has become lazy in that aspect and they like to have a “turn key” society where everything is done for them or fixed for them and they just “turn a key” to move in and push a button to get help. People tend to not think outside their wallets to the overall health aspect of global warming or to see how the costs would go down it everyone started to change their vehicles or purchase those that are already made for the fuel type you are seeking. This is called supply and demand, the more the public wants or needs something the more readily available it becomes at more reasonable prices as people start to have more competition! Think about it…if you are the only one around with the service…you can charge whatever you want and people will pay it because they have no choice! SUBMISSION #2: MORAL RESPONSIBILITY: CRITICAL THINKING Moral Values: “Personal qualities and rules of conduct that distinguish a person (and group of people) of up-standing character.” (Chaffee, 2009) 1) Do we have a moral responsibility toward less fortunate people? Let’s look at what the definition of “moral responsibility” is according to the dictionary: Moral: “involving right and wrong: relating to issues of right and wrong and to how individual people behave; derived from personal conscience: based on what somebody’s conscience suggests is right or wrong, rather than on what rules or the law says should be done.” (Microsoft Office) Responsibility: “accountability: the state, fact, or position of being accountable to somebody or for something.” (Microsoft Office) Let’s look at what the definition of “less fortunate” is according to the dictionary: Less: “to smaller degree; minus; not having a particular quality” (Microsoft Office) Fortunate: “lucky: enjoying good luck; resulting from luck: happening as a result of good luck; bringing luck: bringing good luck.” (Microsoft Office) First, let’s look at responsibility….accountability. In this type of situation (involving the “less fortunate”), you are truly only accountable to yourself. Someone can only hold you accountable for something if you allow them to. Pertaining to right or wrong (morality) with the “less fortunate,” your perception of “less fortunate” directly relates to what one would consider right or wrong. Second, who are we to judge who is “less fortunate?” It depends on what a person perceives as “less fortunate.” For example, a couple with kids might see a couple without kids as “less fortunate” but the couple without kids might see the couple with kids as “less fortunate.” The man on the street sees you rushing by with a top of the line cell phone after leaving your top of the line car with the valet on your way to some important meeting. That man on the street could be thinking how lucky he is that he is no longer tied to that world while you were thinking how lucky you were not to be on the street. There is no simple answer to this question as “moral responsibility” and “less fortunate” are in the eye of the beholder. SUBMISSION #3: Behind the Blue Wall ( excerpts ) Abstract: All abusers use basically the same methods to control and abuse their intimate partners but when the abuser is a police officer, many of the same traits that are valued and necessary for on duty police officers can make those same officers dangerous when they are perpetrators of domestic abuse. Law enforcement has an army of skills and intimidation tactics that civilians do not commonly have and professional training in the use of force, weapons, interrogation and surveillance techniques come together into a dangerous and sometimes lethal combination in domestic situations. Victims come up against law enforcement and legal system biases and the brotherhood of protection with a “code of silence” that is hard to overcome when reporting or trying to get help with this type of abuse. (excerpt #1) Domestic violence is hard enough to get away from and survive, but when the abuser represents the very authority you are supposed to go to for protection, an officer of the law, the intimate partner has special circumstances to overcome. A pattern of behaviors, alone or in any combination, involving physical, ******, economical, mental or emotional abuse by an intimate partner to gain or maintain control over the other partner is domestic violence. Not all domestic violence is physical. Compared to 10% of families of the general population, at least 40% of police officer families experience domestic violence. When further compared to the military population, police families rated higher in all acts of aggression except those involving severe violence……. (excerpt 2)…… I bought it hook line and sinker and we got married. I later found out the true reason he was no longer on the Sherriff’s department: he was relieved of duty due to a conflict of interest as he had engaged in a ****** relationship with the victim of a domestic dispute case he was investigating (turned out I actually met this woman; shortly after we started dating, we went dancing and over the DJ announcements, a song was dedicated to “deputy Ogden”, not Dennis, but “deputy Ogden.” It was a song with the lyrics “lying, cheating, cold dead beating, two timing double dealing, mean mistreating, loving heart” (Blame it on Your Heart; Patty Lovelace)). Mmmmm…hindsight is 20/20. His friends became our friends, which consisted mainly of his police buddies and their spouses. My friends didn’t like Dennis and he made them feel unwelcome when they came to visit so they eventually stopped coming (this pattern continued with any new friends that I made without him throughout our relationship. I had no friends of my own.) Among these friends was a couple by the name of James and Shannon Larson. James was still on the Sherriff’s department and kept Dennis abreast of everything going on. His wife Shannon was a nurse whom I didn’t get to know super well on a one on one basis, but when we did get together, we clicked well. Unbeknownst to either one of us, we were both experiencing our own personal hells. The verbal abuse both of us were undergoing was tremendous…….. (excerpt #3)…….Shannon wasn’t so lucky. In the early morning of February 15, 1996, James violated his restraining order and took Shannon, her niece and mother hostage, holding them for several hours before killing Shannon and then himself in front of Shannon’s niece and mother. At Shannon’s funeral, Dennis told me that he should have known this was possible and that domestic violence was happening because James’ first wife, Bobbi Jo, had come to him with complaints of such a nature. Dennis talked with James to “put an end to it” and Bobbi Jo never complained again, so Dennis dropped it and never took it further. I remember thinking what a hypocrite he was being since he was doing the exact same thing, wasn’t he even aware of it?? It took me from the night of February 15, 1996 to June 2004 to be able to sequester enough money to make my escape since he kept such control over the money, so much so I would have to ask to buy milk, and then he would want the change. Police abusers differ from other abusers because they are tougher and more dangerous due to the advantages of their training, badge, gun, and the brotherhood behind them. The “making” of a police officer is much like going through the military to become a soldier: training is specialized to strip the person of their previous identity, (this was a double whammy of personality stripping for me since Dennis was an ex marine as well). When an officer puts on the uniform, he assumes the power that goes with it and commands obedience and respect, keeping his emotions under control because they are trained to discipline their minds to remain focused no matter how dynamic or terrifying a situation is and this often carries into the home. They are sworn to “develop the Esprit De Corps”, a spirit of solidarity, a sense of pride, devotion, and honor among the members of a group; in the ethical oath for police officers taken when graduating the police academy. This one line is taken very seriously, creating a brotherhood and an “us against them” attitude…….. (final excerpt #4)…… “Officer involved domestic violence” has been happening under the radar for some time. In 1996 an amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 called the Lautenberg Amendment made it unlawful for anyone convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, to include police officers, to carry firearms or ammunition. This affects officers applying for positions with these convictions on their records and those already on the job who can no longer carry their service revolver, creating a handicap to the department as well as blemishing the reputation by undermining the credibility and effectiveness of the department. As a consequence of the Lautenberg Amendment, when an intimate partner goes to the department to report domestic violence and the police find out it is against one of their own, the atmosphere changes in the investigation. It is investigated as a family secret and chosen to be dealt with in house because the officers are now talking about an officer in need instead of responding to the victim of a crime. Most times, the victim is often perceived as hysterical, exaggerating, or lying. The victim may be told how stressed out or how much pressure the officer is under because of the long hours, days off spent in court, shift work, and canceled leaves. The complaining spouse is told that if her spouse lost their job it would be devastating to the family. The victim is urged to settle it off the record, therefore keeping the police “code of silence.” (continues) ........
