Freelance Producer: August, 2007 – November 2007 As freelance producer, produced, directed, co-wrote and narrated the one hour long documentary focusing on the lives of Native Americans and their challenges Schools of Christian Mission DVD, Stories from the Circle of Life - narratives of Native Americans exploring faith journeys, culture and quality of life issues.. This resource engaged the United Methodist denomination in conversation around this country’s First Nation peoples, addressing issues confronting Native American communities as a result of the dominant culture’s historical oppression. Director of Communications The United Methodist Church, California-Nevada Region November 2001 – March 2008 Research, developed and implemented, in coordination with the bishop, a full range of media strategies to communicate the activities and positions of the United Methodist Church. Executed crisis response communication. Oversaw media relations, including managing relations with local radio, print and television media to secure and facilitate coverage of the UMC on critical issues related to the church and community. Researched, consulted on and crafted media releases, articles, speeches and presentations. Served as press secretary and spokesperson for the denomination in the California-Nevada region. Key Accomplishments • Web Presence: Redesigned the conference website: cnumc.org, with a marked increase in traffic to the website, as demonstrated in the postings and responses generated. • Quarterly print product: Developed, served as managing editor of Connection and wrote articles for this newly developed conference publication • Multi-media: Developed and produced a series of informational videos on subjects including cross-cultural ministry, campus ministry and volunteers in mission. All for distributiuon to local churches. • Public Media Liaison: Crafted campaign protesting CBS network decision to segregate contestants by race on a popular reality show. The resulting four-city protest led to Cal-Nevada UM presence added to local TV network’s community relations task force. Director of Television Programming United Methodist Communications, Nashville, Tennessee August 2000 – November 2001 Produced national television programming for the 8 million member United Methodist Church. Broadcasts served to introduce and enforce UMC brand imaging to the secular community. Developed diverse contacts in the media, thereby promoting the UMC message. Key Accomplishment: • Produced Nationally aired Documentary Ngone’s Story: A Tale of Africa’s Orphans. Researched, field produced, interviewed, scripted, narrated and produced edit sessions for hour-long documentary, aired nationally on NBC television. documented a Senegalese girl’s journey and the supportive role of the UMC. Unaware that she would soon face life as an AIDS orphan, her story illuminated the plight of thousands of children served by the UMC. Managing Editor, Odyssey Weekly Odyssey Cable Television Network (Hallmark Network) United Methodist Communications, Nashville, TN February 1997 – August 2000 Strategized and led editorial direction of newsroom for this national, magazine format, cable news television program. Managed story development and news gathering through all stages of production. Supervised staff of reporters and video crews in the U.S. and internationally. The program probed moral, ethical and spiritual issues as well as the role the UMC plays in modeling the Christian response to such questions. Key Accomplishment • Produced National Segment : Produced segment for nationally televised Hallmark TV News series, focusing on Liberation Theology in the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Director, Department of Electronic Media UMC, General Board of Global Ministries, New York, New York May 1986 – January 1997 Managed the development and production of international video and radio programming. Distributed throughout the denomination, this programming served to educate, reinforce UM identity and inspire ministry for the 9 million members of this global denomination. Key Accomplishments: • Co-produced national documentary: Producer on ABC-TV, Africa, Alive with Faith • Introduced UMC Radio to Moscow: Rolled-out the UMC’s first religious radio station and programming to the people of Moscow, Russia by creating an in-country team of producers and management staff to develop stories that reflecting Moscow’s spiritual life in post-communist country. • Hosted Program: Created and hosted monthly, half-hour magazine format television program. Mission Magazine documented and publicized the work and mission of the UMC and its global mission. • Introduced live satellite: Maximized effectiveness of broadcast & teleconferencing, globally & domestically, to help coordinate messages and execute strategy development. News Producer WSB-TV (ABC), Atlanta, Georgia January 1982 – May 1986 Produced two newscasts for this major market “news leader,” Duties to deliver program to air included exercising news judgment in story selection, supervising production staff and crew, assigning stories to program producers, communication with control room and director, writing, producing edit sessions.
