Greg Smith was born in Newcastle in 1979. He learnt piano from his mother, Naomi Smith, until commencing undergraduate studies at the University of Newcastle in 1997. There he studied piano with Carmel Lutton and composition with Colin Spiers and Nigel Butterley. During that time he was awarded the Undergraduate Scholarship for Outstanding Entrants, the Friends of the Conservatorium Prize, the Newton-John Memorial Music Prize, and the Frank Duncan Memorial Scholarship. He completed his Bachelor of Music with Honours (Class I) and a University Medal in 2000. Awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award in 2001, Smith subsequently undertook a Master of Creative Arts at the University of Newcastle, studying performance practice issues in Russian piano music, during which time he developed an interest in the music of Nicholas Medtner. Greg Smith taught at the University of Newcastle (2000-2005) and Avondale College (2006). From 2007 he developed an online system of music education (www.emotemuse.com). He presently teaches in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney. Greg Smith's compositional style is diverse, including chamber music, sacred music, and music theatre. Sacred music forms a substantial part of his recent output in part due to his role as musical director of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newcastle, NSW. In 2010, Greg's setting of 'The Lord is King' (Psalm 92) won the Fourth Annual Anthem Competition of the First Baptist Church of Worcester, Massachusetts. Greg Smith also composes and improvises for Silent Films for the Australia's Silent Film Festival. Films to date include Nosferatu, The Lodger, The General, Tol'rable David, and shorts by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keating.
