Just gorgeous Owen! I did think this was pastel on black paper. You handle digital media beautifully. Thank you for including your story behind your work. I am always so curious about what the artist intended and how much it matches up or is different from my own Interpretation. I love how you don't even see the ghostly, evil figures at first. It seems to me that he is the conflicted one struggling with his own demons and she is trying to comfort him and keep him protected by her love for him. Once I read your description I thought of not just their demise, but the end of their relationship. As he seems to be pulling away while she hangs on. In this case the faces represent all the Distractions of the world which, after that first initial stage of love where you are both inside a bubble together, comes either sneaking or crashing into your private world, trying to tear you apart. Sometimes in a huge way, but more often in small, annoying thoughts and seemingly insignificant actions, which if not dealt with over time, build up, and can shatter the relationship. Unfortunately, many times this happens as a shock to one party — in this case it would be the young girl, who seems to still be focused on her love as the center of her universe, while his unfocused look — being the direction of his gaze and his image literally becoming blurry — suggests that he is already fading from his connection to her.
As always, your light playing across their faces, especially with so many colors (my favorite way to paint black or white) is absolutely stunning. Your execution of the ghostly faces and hands in form, foreshortening, translucency, and placement is just brilliant. Especially the hand which seems to almost caress the girls face: Expressing the evil desire to corrupt such innocence.
