Love your work , justd look at a convo with another freelancer about customers not wanting to pay deposits . I have been honest as I can and work hard to produce my designs then someone comes along and takes the credit for all the hardwork and sleepless nights ,weeks that I endure,.
I have seen many of my pieces changed a little but still can identify my own work as I have put so much time and effort into creating the designs so other people prosper because they have more money than me and can afford to have up and running websites, too many thiefs and liars stealing other peoples hard work in this game......SO you are quite right to ask for deposit ........I haven't been paid for one job yet as everyone seems to want things for free can you give me any tips
Janet Bradley - Over 30 days ago
Karen, it saddens me what these fantastic artists go through to make a living at their art. The computer really opened the door to exposure but also let in the scrupulous people. So beware of those that don't appreciate and look at us as replaceable, expendable. The way I see it, you get what you pay for and not getting paid is the worst. I did a four month long project close to eighty hours a week and at the end the client didn't pay. I will never do that again, so a deposit up front and payments weekly as the project progresses, also I charge by the hour, that way they consider their changes and ask for clearly what they need. People ask me do do their work and after I tell them what I charge I get 1 out of 5 which weeds out the cheap non serious client. My advise is be patient, don't be too eager to except every job, let them walk, your work is superb! I hope this helps my dear and good luck to you!
Ingrid Zacharias - Over 30 days ago
I agree 100% Janet. I got burned a few times when I first started out. Some people tell you you have the job, and send you stuff so you can begin work, but then they don't put down that you got the job on here and after you have put in a certain number of hours, they lie and say they found someone closer to home. When in reality, they asked different people to do different parts of the task and play the same trick on them in the hopes of getting a complete business plan by using a variety of people's work. Or they ask for samples, now we all have portfolios, so they know what each of us is capable of but instead, they ask for samples. Why, because they will use all of the samples we submit to choose their finished product from. So they might have a few illustrations from a few different artists, they might have some graphic designs from a few different graphic designers. What do they end up with, a portfolio full of pictures that they can use.

I also agree with Janet about asking for a deposit. I say they must put down that I have been given the job on here, and they must pay the deposit I request up front before I begin work, and like Janet, I set payment dates. In fact, I create an action plan for the work, that shows when I need info from them, when they can expect me to complete a segment and what dates they will have to pay me. That way, no misunderstandings (or supposed ones) and no excuses for not paying. Plus, if payment isn't made on the agreed date, work stops till the payment clears PayPal. It's important to be assertive and ensure they know you are going to work in a professional way, which means they pay you as you both agreed before you started.

One fellow had me work on his business plan, but there were all kinds of red flags. He claimed his family had been doing this particular type of business for years, and were opening a new site and needed a bank loan to buy the land. Well, unless you have collateral, a bank is not going to give you money for land alone, especially if you are planning on building on it. He dragged his feet on giving me my deposit. He wanted me to send him whatever I had as soon as I completed it, still no money. Anyway, after I had put in about 20 hours of work, he advised me that they had found someone where he lived to do the job. I wrote him some nasty emails. He claimed they hadn't hired me and that there was no agreement between us. I told him I was going to go to the better business bureau in his area. Initially, he seemed concerned but that disappeared. I kept emailing him and sending him a bill from PayPal. He said he was going to get his group of lawyers after me. I told him, I doubted he even had a lawyer, and anything I had written to him that might be considered defamation was not because I only sent it to him. Anyway, he said he never said he wasn't going to pay me. I told him, fine then pay me and I'll leave you alone. Still no money. So I checked on Linked In to see if he had a resume. He did, it said he had graduated biz school 3 years ago and had been CEO of a different business every year for the past three years. Now, I'm not stupid, no one gets hired right out of business school to be a CEO. I was a CEO and believe me it wasn't that simple. Anyway, if you have been on Linked In, sometimes on the right hand side they put up employees of the same company of the person whose resume you are reading. Well, it just so happened that they had put up the profile of the communications officer of the company he claimed to be CEO of his first year out of university.

So I contacted the lady, explained the situation, and asked if she had ever heard of him. She asked her bosses and both had never heard of him. At that point, I copied his LinkedIn profile and resume and sent it to her. She got back to me and asked me to send the URL of his profile and resume, so I did. A couple weeks later, I got another email from her saying they were forwarding everything that I had sent them to their lawyer. I went to check on the guy's resume and all of a sudden it only said he lived in the USA and there was no resume. What I am assuming happened is that their lawyer sent him a letter saying if he did not cease and desist from claiming he had been CEO of that company, that he would be sued. So I got my revenge. I still send him PayPal invoices and have added a service fee for non-payment. Just to remind him that I'm still here and that there will be others out there as persistent as me to get either their money or their pound of flesh. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Shhhhhhhhhhhh I'm the hulk in disguise. lol ;) This is a true story though.
Ingrid Zacharias - Over 30 days ago
Except for the Hulk part. lol :)
Janet Bradley - Over 30 days ago

Tiffany Thornton - Over 30 days ago
I am so upset and frustrated as of late....almost want to throw in the towel......I have been ripped off three times (well, once was a scam I caught prior and reported to Odesk) but the other two were actual jobs with supposed money down (the company can track your work...but, these clients ended the contract prior and took my work with them). I just seem to be getting nowhere fast and feeling quite saddened. I hope this is also a good lesson.....never do any work upfront.....NEVER! Contracts are vital and a percentage down (which, I did do but they can be sneaky). Feeling Blue.......Tiff
David Shepherd - Over 30 days ago
Don't you dare, young Tiff!!! You know what I told you, hunny!!! ;-)
Ingrid Zacharias - Over 30 days ago
Tiff, when I get a contract that is going to take a while, I set up an action plan, telling the client what I need from them and when, what they can expect from me and when, and I build in the payments along the way. I also do not send them the final copy till I get paid the last bit I am owed. A true client will not ask you to do work up front. That's what your portfolio is for. I ask for a deposit from everyone now, because I got ripped off too many times. Beware of the ads that want you to submit things first, because odds are they will take all the work done by people applying and reuse it and pay no one. You should talk to Cirrelia, because she actually has her clients sign a written contract with her and she also demands a deposit up front and tells them when each payment will need to be made. That way if you don't get your payment, they don't get your work. I'm so sorry they did that to you, it makes you feel like you can't trust anyone.
Janet Bradley - Over 30 days ago
Cheers to my fellow artists. My method is similar to W.W. and Cirrelias. My close friend Jackie Diaz advised me to: Set an hourly fee, agree on a certain amount of hours a week to work on their project and every two weeks they deposit money into your account or the work stops. That way you have a constant income and It weeds out the users. You do work for clients who appreciate your work. This has worked very well for me.
