Thanks. It was for a graphic novel I was bidding on. It got me the job, but now I've got to complete the rest! Posing models tomorrow for cover illustration; dry ice, lights, wardrobe, etc. I always get nervous, self-doubt- the usual. it's exciting, though. I'm really glad you like the drawing.

wow that does sound exciting! are you going to put them in your portfolio for viewing, it would be great to see them.

If they come out well I will. If not, I'll pretend they never happened! I'm going to be borrowing from the comic book guys on this project; a lot of different and interesting perspectives and angles: above, below, behind, 3/4 angles; Layout, layout, layout. Also very dramatic lighting. It's something I've needed to do for a while now, instead of just relying on the rendering. The work I usually admire most of others is the stuff I I can't or don't do. I'll know in a few hours!

Thanks for sharing the story and motivation behind these brilliant drawings. You a swerved several of my previous questions here. I hope you are getting paid a bunch for this series. Your skills really shine here, Danner! Good for you for facing the unknown and stretching your skills.. Like I always tell my students and sons if it's something worth doing chances are it will scare you at least a little. Challenging ourselves as artists is how we develop new ideas, continue to learn, and truly create from our authentic core. Your results are stunning and inspire me to push myself as well. I relate to those butterflies myself. I guess it's always a struggle with self doubt, so as long as we don't allow it to prevent us from making new art, Then we are fulfilling our purpose and contributing to our world.
I can't wait to see the rest of these as I am sure you will post them. They will be fantastic, trust me.

Thank you, Shawn. The pay isn't the best, but the book has a better chance than most do of success, so I took it on a hope and a prayer and I will fill in where needed with other projects to cover some of my expenses that it falls short on. It takes me a while to complete one of these as an oil painting.

I am right there with you on balancing profit with expenses. I always try to remember Vincent Van Gogh selling small, chintzy flower paintings to try and support his true passion for painting. So, if one of the most celebrated and controversial painters of all time had to resort to painting single layer subjects in 'pleasing' colors, chosen by patrons to match their nineteenth century sofas, then I guess I can do the same. Am I right?

I'm curious: how long would this painting take, on average, to complete? And will it also be 2'x3'? I am still painting at snail speed, and need to loosen-up and speed-it-up! Thank you for sharing you process as well as your feelings of inadequacy when taking on a new challenge. Hearing that from someone as gifted as yourself makes facing my fears involved in producing art much, MUCH easier!

If I were able to focus only on this painting, a month to month and a half would do it (10 plus hours a day). The painting is 2' by 3.' Also, loosening-up, has been a huge trouble spot for me, but I've been getting a little better at it.

Again Danner, I am SOOOOO right there with you. I also feel much better knowing that I'm not the only one who labors long in order to complete a realistic artwork. Once again Sir, you inspire me. :)
