If I could spend my time with my nose buried in a book for the rest of my life, that is most likely where I would be. However, that does not pay the bills. I am the type of person who drove people mad because I was always correcting their work and I was good at it. I graduated in the top percentage of my class and, like everyone else, I would love to do something that I enjoy and that I am good at. I am not the type to be overly harsh when editing or proofreading. I will not lie to you but I will not be overly critical either. I have found there is a difference between pointing out mistakes and making a person feel foolish.

Mackenzie Maltby Tamayo 1216 West Colorado Avenue Suite 10 Colorado Springs, CO 80904 mtamayo@uccs.edu Phone: 719-337-3189 OBJECTIVE: To obtain a freelance writing position EDUCATION: 2011 University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Colorado Springs, CO Bachelors English African American Literature (Upper Division): I spent the semester reading and writing about the Harlem Renaissance as well as many of the more prolific contemporary African American writers like. I worked closely with my professor to better understand the psychology of race and gender that is prevalent in our culture. I wrote a research paper on Ntosake Shange’s choreopoem For Colored Girls and Gloria Naylor’s novel The Women of Brewster Place and posed the question: How do black women survive the oppressive violence demonstrated to them by black men? What is the psychology behind it? I argue by deconstructing the stereotype of the “strong black woman” and clinging to other black women for support, the black woman is able to regain her voice and dignity. I proved this trough close reading Naylor and Shange’s pieces of literature. I received an A in the course and was encouraged by my professor to submit my paper for publication. Grant and Proposal Writing (Upper Division): I learned the art of making and perfecting a grant specifically geared for non-profit groups. For my final project, I interviewed Colorado Springs local Julie Abel of Family Life Services, which is a residential community for single moms and their children designed to help families build a foundation for a new start in life. By working with her and understanding the psychology of these women better, I was able to craft a unique grant proposal that could be potentially beneficial to their organization.
