I am a self taught artist and have been drawing and painting all my life. I enjoyed my work as a graphic layout artist, but it was always my ambition to become a freelance artist, and in 2002 I did just this. I only exhibit once in a while, as most of my work in commission based and I have only a few paintings of my own personally, most are prints of previous commissions. I also provide tuition to small groups and individuals. I offer portraits, landscapes, buildings, etc...but my speciality lies in animal portraiture. Working to the highest detail and anatomical correctness I aim to capture the character of each individual animal. The majority of my portrait work is done using photographs, so there’s no “sitting” required. The portraits are usually in oil based coloured pencil or oil on canvas but as each piece is individual...it's up to you. I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who has any enquiries, or wants to know more about my work.

Education I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Boston University, graduating *** laude in 1982. At BU I improved upon the solid foundation of grammar and creativity I had established in high school, to the point where I possessed the excellent writing and editing skills necessary for a career in journalism. I graduated from Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton, MA, in 1978, as a member of the National Honor Society and recipient of the school’s first award in Creative Writing. Writing/Editing Background 2007 – Present: For the past four years I have worked full time on researching and writing a novel of historical fiction. During this time I have attended conferences and taken classes with published authors and editors such as Joann Ferguson, Lynne Heitman, Hallie Ephron, and Anita McCellan. Each of these professionals has helped me to translate my excellent journalistic and business writing skills into the craft of fiction writing. 2008 – Present: Member, Newport Roundtable. This organization, headed by published authors Mark Ellis (James Axler) and Melissa Martin-Ellis, and attended by a number of talented writers, has helped me to sharpen both my fiction writing and critique skills. 2009 – Present: Founding member, Old Colony Writers Group. This is a group of dedicated writers south of Boston who come together twice per month to critique one another’s work. The members of this group, along with those of the Newport Roundtable, have convinced me that I have a strong ability to provide valuable feedback on their writing, from finding every typo and grammatical miscue to helping them with character development, setting, pacing, point-of-view, narrative distance, and plot. 2009 – Present: I currently sit on the Board of Directors of the Cape Cod Writers Center, where my duties include coordination of the Center’s critique groups. 1979 – 1985: While in college and immediately after, I wrote as an intern, stringer, and reporter for the Daily Free Press at BU, the North Adams Transcript, the Middlesex News, the Brookline Chronicle Citizen, and the Adams Packet. Business Experience Boston Globe, 1981 – 2001 During my time at The Globe I rose from part-time customer service representative to Circulation Manager. Yes, the tendency of Senior Management to ask me to write important departmental communications overcame my dearth of business training, helping me to learn the business, develop contacts, and climb through the ranks. KT Smith Inc, dba Northeast Realty Sign, 2001 – 2007 I left the Globe to purchase my own business, a real estate sign company that had been established since 1973. As owner I managed all aspects of the business. During my tenure we increased sales from $400,000 to $750,000 per year. I sold the company in 2007.

My pencil and brush have become an extension of who I am, it is my hope that you can see the love and dedication that goes into every piece that I create. People ask me, how long it takes me to create my portraits and artwork. My reply is however long it takes to get it right; I don't look at the clock. When I am creating a piece of art, time doesn't matter, the only thing that does matter, is that you, the customer is 100% happy. I will work tirelessly to give you the best product I can. \When you are happy, I am happy.

I was born in Costa Rica, but raised in Vancouver. My art tends to be colorful and warm, a strong reflection of my home country. Pastel and acrylic painting are two favorite mediums to work in. Most people describe me as dependable, patient, and have a love for the outdoors.
