Artist Statement Ry Wilkin is a self-taught artist who works with a range of mediums. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia (SA) in 1983, and grew up in rural SA. Before pursuing his art career, Ry worked as a carpenter, which required working with a range of domestic and industrial building materials. The skills developed from this trade have carried over to his art practice. In addition to wood and metal work, Ry’s hybrid art practice incorporates stencilling, digital painting and 2D animation. In 2006 Ry co-founded design label are/why?, a creative space for a range of artists across Australia to collaborate in fashion, design, music and animation. Highlights for are/why? include animation projection at Fuse Festival and This Is Not Art festival, and the nationally-screened video clip for Australian band Sydonia. Ry has exhibited extensively in Newcastle with the ArtHive crew and in 2012 had his first solo show in Melbourne. Ry has since been commissioned by local theatre and music groups for animation projections, digital artwork and short animated clips. Education Certificate 3 in Carpentry Completed SACE (Year 12, South Australian Certificate of Education) in 2000 Skills Solid understanding of Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects. Skills in Adobe Illustrator and Premier. Comfortable with Ink, Aerosol, Watercolour and Oil paints. Great at cutting out stencils with a pen knife. Biography / Filmography Director ~ Neil Affleck A native of Montréal, Quebec Neil Affleck studied animation as a teenager with the National Film Board of Canada under the aegis of world-renowned animation pioneer, Norman McLaren. At Dawson College in Montreal, he earned a diploma in social sciences, and completed a three-year professional theatre training program. From 1979 through to 1985, he worked as a professional actor in Canadian theatre, film and television. In 1985, Neil moved to Los Angeles to study at the UCLA School of Motion Pictures and Television, where he graduated in 1988. Between 1988 and 2000 Neil worked as an animated filmmaker in Los Angeles, notably as the director of the award-winning educational film “Sacajawea”, and for a decade with the celebrated television series “The Simpsons”, the last four as a director. In 1999 Neil was nominated for a Prime Time Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program for the Simpsons episode “Viva Ned Flanders”. In 2001, Neil returned to Canada to work with Nelvana on the Maurice Sendak series “Seven Little Monsters”. From 2003 to 2006 he directed the children’s television series “Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends” and “A Froggy Day in Sunny Patch” This direct-to-video film was honored with the Humanitas Prize for 2006 in Los Angeles. In 2006 and 2007 Neil worked in Los Angeles as an Animation Timing Director on “The Simpson’s Movie” Neil directed “Pearlie” for Nelvana between 2009 and 2010 and he worked as Supervising Director of “Mike the Knight” a preschool Nelvana / HIT coproduction from 2010 through 2012. In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Neil is an educator. He was a part-time instructor at the California Institute of the Arts from 1997 to 2000, working with the late Jules Engel in the Experimental Animation Program. From 2003-2004 he taught part-time at the Seneca College Animation Arts Program in Toronto. Neil speaks English, French and Spanish. Born in North York, Ontario, Joe Osei Bonsu has always had a fascination for the visual arts. His inspiration originates from all the comic books and animated shows that were exposed to him, during his adolescence.
