A native of Michigan, born in Detroit in 1936, Thomas Mahar attended public schools in Detroit, Oak Park, and Clawson, Michigan. He graduated from the Detroit Business Institute with a bachelor of commercial science degree in 1962 after which he held various positions in business. He was President of Gala Food Packaging in Battle Creek, Michigan 1993-1998, and served as Executive Vice-President of Monitor Sugar Company, in Bay City, Michigan 1984-1999. Previously, he served as corporate controller for nine years. He began writing after retiring in 1999. That year he won second place in the Historical/American Frontier Novel Category in the Southwest Writers Workshop. For the past five years, he has conducted a 10-week, (January-March) writing seminar for snowbirds in Destin, Florida. For the past two years, he has authored a weekly column appearing in five newspapers, November-March in the Florida panhandle. He also maintains two blogs, Who Was Who In the Michigan Sugar Industry at http://whowaswho.blogspot.com/ and History of Michigan's Beet Sugar Industry at http://beetsugarhistory.blogspot.com. He is the author of Sweet Energy, the story of Monitor Sugar Company, published in 2000 and the yet unpublished Sweet Legacy, the History of the Michigan Sugarbeet Industry, completed in 2011.
