Pusuit is a new online magazine which launched in January of 2011. Philadelphia Jewish Oral History Project Director 8/2005-present Direct a multi-year oral history project of the Sholom Aleichem Club, one of the last surviving organizations within Philadelphia’s old Jewish left community. The project goals include: 1) providing a starting point for an more extensive inquiry into and documentation of Philadelphia’s Jewish and left-wing history, thus filling the gap in existing scholarship about Philadelphia’s progressive Jewish history, 2) educating future generations of progressive Jews about the Club’s legacy and supporting their continuing efforts for social and political change. PJOHP evolved out of my decision to create something of lasting historical value by telling the stories of the Club founders, a pioneering group of Philadelphia Jewish activists, who had been leaders in important efforts for local democratic change and in creating and transmitting a vibrant and progressive Jewish culture to future generations of Philadelphia Jews. Responsibilities include: · Conducting interviews with surviving founders, family members of deceased founders, and early members of the Sholom Aleichem Club; · Creating a series of solo-theater performances, which will draw from the interviews I conduct and which will interweave Club members personal stories with dramatizations of historical events that influenced the political context of these stories; · Writing op-ed pieces, conducting radio interviews and developing other promotional materials about the performance series. · Developing a writing course for Jewish youth which will teach participants how to use folklore, and oral history interviews to document and perform stories of community and social change; · Writing a book that documents all phases of PJOHP the Club’s oral history, the solo performance work, and my work with youth..
