Artist's Statement: I was born in Colorado and lived there until I felt it was time for me to go and explore my future. I began traveling at 16. I moved into a city or country until I established a profession, an existence, a story there. Once life became habitual, it would be time to seek a new part of my self, and I would abandon everything to begin anew. I participated in this nomad life, writing all the details of it, until I began my family, and in 1999, settled down in rural—beautiful!—West Virginia. Art for me continues to be a way to journey and learn about pieces of my hidden self. I have been involved in the arts my whole life. I have been a writer, a jewelry designer, a sculptor, a stained glass artist and a potter, yet I have not been able to maintain a long term rapport with any medium until I began my relationship with photography. Photography is very intuitive for me. Ever since I picked up a camera I have treated it as a means of articulation, and I have been confident that it is what I would do with my life. As an artist I enjoy the foreplay of creating. When initiating art in the past I’ve only been capable of addressing one or two ideas at a time, but through photography I am able to indulge hundreds of intentions in a short period. I love the immediacy of this medium. I also love that photography is a business of light; it is literally composing using luminescence as ones tool. There is no secret that “light” is the term used by many spiritual paths to define what is pure and divine. It is an honor spending my moments chasing such divinity. In this regard photography has become not just an expression, but a form of worship. It is seeing what is miraculous and sacred in life, and then sharing these evoked sensations with others through visual poetry. Substantiating with imagery is a way to communicate and point out this awesome world for others to notice and realize. As a photographer I can be an artist that isn’t just the inventor but the receiver of creation, and who interacts with this art daily. This is why I view photography simultaneously as prayer and revelry. Transcendence through imagery abounds in each moment. It’s just a matter of acknowledging this and opening ones heart to the receiving of it. Find me on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andi-Rowe-Contemporary-Artist/155763434479722 I am a British artist and have commissioned work hanging with private collectors in countries as varied as the Czech Republic, New Zealand, Australia and the UK. I have developed my own unique style over the last thirty years and, having combined this with my traditional training, produce work that is both modern and of the highest standard. Having travelled to all five continents of the world over the last twenty four years, I have drawn from my many experiences translating my lengthy sojourn into both the styles used and my use of colour. My work has taken influence from across the globe. I have enjoyed creating work with street artists in Costa Rica, Fiji and Samoa and have inherited a sense of the immutable nature of art and the profound effect it can have on the viewer. In addition, my travels have allowed me to study the art techniques employed by the native peoples of northern, central and south America as well as those used by both Aboriginal and African peoples. My formal training, under the tutelage of Diane Branscombe RA, was an intensive exploration of the fine art techniques used by the old Dutch masters. Developing my style over years of artistic exploration, I have also taken inspiration from the Cubist, Expressionist and Impressionist movements of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as well as from artists such as Vermeer, Matisse & Pollack. My work has evolved over my years of travel and through my in depth examination of the differing painting techniques employed by the many painting ‘groups’ such as the old Dutch masters and Impressionists. The majority of my work now displaying my bold brush stroke style coupled with the complex interplay of light and dark across the subject in my achromatic and monochromatic approach. Take your time reviewing my work and I hope that you enjoy it- Andi
