Hi I’m Alexandra Coombs, I’m currently a student at Fanshawe College, enrolled in a 3D Animation and Character Design one year post-grad program. I graduated from Mohawk College with a Diploma in Television Communications in 2010. In the past four years I have been taking my time figuring out where I want to take my life and what my career choice is going to be. Studying television, I found myself always enjoying graphic. I completely dominated in the web design, photoshop and after effects and decided that’s where I’d like to go. Last year, I got an internship at Soho VFX in Toronto. I went in their studio knowing close to nothing about VFX. I got the chance to job shadow all positions and I learned so much. I was very intrigued by the texture artist; taking a blank object and bringing it to life through painting and detailing objects interested me a lot. I thought it was amazing. I asked question after question after question until I figured out what I needed to do to become that person. Although a bit late in the game, I applied to school for VFX and 3D. I got put on the waiting list for Sheridan and Seneca but got accepted to Fanshawe. Since I didn’t have time to wait, I accepted. This year at Fanshawe has been the hardest year of my life. I came into this program knowing absolutely nothing about 3D and what it actually took to make 3D Animation. I was definitely one of the biggest under dogs and it showed. I cried, and I came close to failing. But failure or giving up isn’t an option for me. I got myself a tutor, Chris Butts (best guy around!), and I stayed by his side until I finally understood what I was doing. I was also the worst at texture when I started – by far the absolute worst! Now I can say I’m one of the top, and overall one of the best in the class. I have only a few more weeks to go until I’m done. It has been the hardest year of my life but at the same time the greatest. If I didn’t believe in myself I would have failed. But, I will never give up and I will always follow my goals and dreams. My biggest goal is to work for Disney’s Pixar. It may be the hardest places to get into, but if I give it my all for the next few years I know will make it.
