Shakespeare said all the world is a stage, but I contend that all the world is a canvas. Our lives are a tiny space, a single thread on this canvas of life. It is our duty to fill this thread with color and meaning. I fill my thread with art of various mediums. Murals, acrylic and watercolor paintings, drawings and calligraphy all take their place. Art is more than functionless decoration or static beauty, it is communication. It allows both the euphoric spirit and the tortured soul a place of expression beyond the confines of word. Works with ambiguity and hidden meanings are especially intriguing to me and I enjoy creating works that express not only life's beauty but its struggles and pain. I also find pleasure in creating little pockets of beauty all around me by imbuing mundane and ordinary objects with grace and charm. A special passion of mine is calligraphy. There is something so sublimely enjoyable and timeless about taking words, a quote, a passage of scripture, or one of Shakespeare's legendary sonnets and transforming it into art that is both visual and literary at the same time. I must admit that creative writing also takes its place among my various chosen expressions. Words, much like paint, lie dormant waiting for just the right touch to imbue life into their inert forms. With the correct composition even the dullest string of words can leap across a page and begin their dance inside the reader's mind. My greatest desire is that when I lay down my brush or pen for the last time I will take a step back and see that I have filled my thread with as much color and beauty as it can possibly hold and that I have passionately lived my life creating beauty all around me.

Hi I’m Alexandra Coombs, I’m currently a student at Fanshawe College, enrolled in a 3D Animation and Character Design one year post-grad program. I graduated from Mohawk College with a Diploma in Television Communications in 2010. In the past four years I have been taking my time figuring out where I want to take my life and what my career choice is going to be. Studying television, I found myself always enjoying graphic. I completely dominated in the web design, photoshop and after effects and decided that’s where I’d like to go. Last year, I got an internship at Soho VFX in Toronto. I went in their studio knowing close to nothing about VFX. I got the chance to job shadow all positions and I learned so much. I was very intrigued by the texture artist; taking a blank object and bringing it to life through painting and detailing objects interested me a lot. I thought it was amazing. I asked question after question after question until I figured out what I needed to do to become that person. Although a bit late in the game, I applied to school for VFX and 3D. I got put on the waiting list for Sheridan and Seneca but got accepted to Fanshawe. Since I didn’t have time to wait, I accepted. This year at Fanshawe has been the hardest year of my life. I came into this program knowing absolutely nothing about 3D and what it actually took to make 3D Animation. I was definitely one of the biggest under dogs and it showed. I cried, and I came close to failing. But failure or giving up isn’t an option for me. I got myself a tutor, Chris Butts (best guy around!), and I stayed by his side until I finally understood what I was doing. I was also the worst at texture when I started – by far the absolute worst! Now I can say I’m one of the top, and overall one of the best in the class. I have only a few more weeks to go until I’m done. It has been the hardest year of my life but at the same time the greatest. If I didn’t believe in myself I would have failed. But, I will never give up and I will always follow my goals and dreams. My biggest goal is to work for Disney’s Pixar. It may be the hardest places to get into, but if I give it my all for the next few years I know will make it.

Once when I asked for a raise one of my employers replied with, “look any fool with a piece of paper and a crayon can write.” It was harsh but I realized he was quite right. At the end of the day all I can really bring to the table is experience, an odd sense of humour and a modest amount of talent. As a writer, I bring more than 25 years of experience and can write to any age and any voice. I, not only sympathize with both clients and listeners and or readers, I can also empathize with them: I know what it’s like to be both a business operator and a homemaker; and there are few writers who can say that. It’s what makes me the very best at what I do. I know the clients because I have been one. I know the demo because I have lived it. - Writing professionally for more than 30 years - Creative Director, imaging, promotions and advertising copywriter Radio - Political and business advertising writer/consultant - Newspaper Columnist - Editor - Publisher - Political Consultant - Political Assistant - Speech Writer (Freelance) - Former president of a print advertising and distribution company
