ROSANNA MACLEOD 18, Hartwell Crescent, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. LU7 1NP. Landline: 01525 79 0273 Mobile: 07 805 531 401 A full-time PhD student who is keen to undertake other projects alongside study that make full use of her knowledge of language and experience of working with the written words as well as her ability to write fluidly and at length. Education and qualifications 2010-2013: PhD in Austrian studies. Researching how Austria responded to the Second World War in its aftermath and how this is manifested in Austrian poetry. For this doctorate, I regularly write at length on the topics I am researching. I have developed a very good knowledge of all the many different movements of modern literature and the landmark figures. I have also gained a good level of knowledge and understanding of modern history. 2010: Completed a medical interpreting course with Pearl Linguistics, London. 2009-10: MA Translation (French and German) University of Bangor. Modules included literary translation. For this degree, I wrote a dissertation of 20,000 words on Austria and the EU. 2004-08: MA Modern Languages (French and German) University of St Andrews. This degree included two English literature modules. For this degree, I wrote a dissertation of 10,000 words on the theme of deception in the nineteenth-century French novel. 2002-04: A levels: English literature- B, French- B, German-B. 2002: GCSEs include French- A*, English Literature-A*, German- B, English-B. Relevant work experience: Writing- wrote articles about literature for publication, payment received. Proofreading- proofread a German guidebook to London of 7,000 words. Subtitling- subtitled a German film. Interpreting- Interviewed German doctors; translated and transcribed resulting interviews so as to compile reports. Translation- To date, I have translated: •German into English: Divorce documents and legal work contracts. •English into French: A museum guidebook. •French into English: Legal property documentation, a property survey, utility bills and an academic text of 7,000 words. •English into French and English into German: extensive guidebook material. Interests: 2008-present: Regular contributor for “Seren”, Bangor University’s student newspaper. 2010-present: Involvement in Bangor Student Radio- I present two shows, I research, write and deliver a weekly news bulletin and am a political researcher for the news team and the Politics Show. 2006-08: Regular contributor for La Manche, St Andrews University French magazine. References: Available upon request. Examples: Here is an example of an article I was paid for writing: Is unforgettable Alice really children’s fiction? With Tim Burton’s latest release, Alice in Wonderland; an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s adventures in Wonderland and through the looking glass, there is bound to be more interest in the children’s fiction classic. But to what extent are Alice’s merry jaunts in a fantasy world really for children? Firstly, our heroine finds more sense in a crazed, erratic and imaginary world than in the mundane reality which bores her to a painful extent and in which she does not really connect with her own sister. Is that really a concept we ought to advertise to young readers? Secondly, the potions and sweets which cause our protagonist to grow and shrink immediately are, to an adult reader, blatant narcotic references. Drug references enveloped in this type of colourful, childlike imagery so often escape the notice of young children (how naïve was I to sing Hey, Mister Tambourine Man in the playground?). Alice’s adventures - and misadventures – are very often littered with social critique and political observations. Many imaginary beings and fantasy creatures personify and represent commonplace people in the real world, sometimes with an uncanny resemblance. The Jabberwock embodies tyranny. The feuding lion and unicorn are representative of the two rival Members of Parliament contemporary to the book’s writing; William Gladstone (leader of the Whig Party) and Benjamin Disraeli (leader of the Tory Party). The former was the source of Queen Victoria’s irritation and the latter the object of her adoration. Moreover, there is the Queen who can order someone’s death at the drop of a mad hatter’s hat. Beheadings are hardly the stuff of fairytales or children’s fiction. However, such violent and tyrannical abuse of power can only ever exist in fiction, of course? Not the case. There is evidence to suggest that Queen Elizabeth the First became very flippant and impulsive with her issuing of execution warrants. I am not suggesting that Alice’s adventures are unsuitable for children. Rather, that Lewis Carroll found it easier to convey his zany Weltanschauung of a surreal so-called normality through the childish fantasy typical of children’s fiction. From his choice, it is evident that the Victorians invented childhood. Not age certificates. This is what makes Alice an unforgettable piece of children’s fiction; in childhood, we naively read about the power-crazed queen, the sweets and potions and the lion and the unicorn, and in adulthood, we can appreciate the more sinister, politicised meanings. Perhaps Alice’s adventures contain more truth than fiction. Lewis Carroll’s lifespan covered a zany reality worthy of fiction. This is why Alice stays with us through life. Moss Green Children’s Books publish for young readers so they do not need a rabbit hole to enjoy fantasy.

Experience Residential Child Care Worker (4/19/11-Present) Advent Group Ministries (90 Great Oaks Blvd. Ste. 108, San Jose, CA 95119) I am currently living in a group home for teenage boys. I was originally asked to come back temporarily to help until new staff could be trained since I had previously worked there. They have asked me to stay and move to a different position as of June 22. During these last couple months I have helped the staff and clients stay organized and on task during major staff changes. I have been able to use my structure and organizational skills to help the clients feel safe and cared for during a time of big changes. I have helped provide support for new staff as well as old staff while cleaning and repairing the houses and organizing paper work. Advent has asked me to stay on a more permanent basis, but with a new baby on the way I don’t feel like I can make a commitment to continue living on site four days a week without neglecting my family. House Parent (1/21/11 – 3/24/11) Rancho Damacitas (38950 Mesa Rd. Temecula, CA 92592) My wife and I were responsible for providing a loving family environment for six boys ranging in age from nine to seventeen. During our time there we were able to provide the house with better structure, which allowed the boys to feel safer and allowed us to help them work on their behavioral issues and learning disabilities. The clients’ grades as well as school behavior improved drastically, as well as their home behavior. Unfortunately we had to leave after three months due to complications my wife was having due to her pregnancy. After meeting several times with the administration, we decided that it would be in the best interest of the boys to resign our positions and allow a family who could focus more on them to come in and take over. Resident Childcare Worker I (10/21/09 – 1/21/11) Advent Group Ministries (90 Great Oaks Blvd. Ste. 108, San Jose, CA 95119) Live-in childcare worker in a group home setting. I was responsible for as many as six teenage guys. I make sure they have three meals a day, get them ready for school, and take them to various Doctors appointments and other meetings. I am also responsible for the upkeep of the home and communicating the clients’ behavior to other house staff, including their caseworker. I was responsible for administering various medications and looking out for the clients well-being. I worked a four day, fifty-four hour work shift with alternating weekend days. During this time I received a promotion to Childcare Worker II along with a pay raise in September of 2010 just before I got married. Originally I had given them my notice as of October 21, 2010 but they were able to provide me with the promotion as well as a four day work schedule that allowed me to continue working full time while my wife finished school. Activities Director (5/12/2009 – 9/16/2009) Kampgrounds of America (1186 San Andreas Dr. Watsonville, CA) I was responsible for planning all activities for the campground. It was my job to make sure that each activity was staffed and flowed smoothly. I was also responsible for obtaining supplies for each activity, maintaining and creating a weekly activity schedule, as well as other maintenance work in between. I was in charge of a team of 8-10 high school and college students to help me staff activities. I scheduled their weekend work shifts and making sure that they were on time, dressed properly, and following company standards. Grill Cook (11/1/2006 – 5/1/2009) Riverside Crab Shack (335 Tuscarora Beach Rd. Winton, NC 27986) I was the main grill and broil cook. I was responsible for communicating to the rest of the kitchen staff the preparation time for side dishes and fried food that would be going with the meal. I also did a weekly walk through of kitchen supplies to place our weekly order. I was responsible for planning new menu ideas and weekly specials. On week days I was the kitchen shift leader and responsible for making sure that everything flowed smoothly and that the kitchen was properly cleaned and sanitized at the end of each shift. Cook/Server/Host (8/3/2003 – 8/7/2006) Pirates Table Restaurant (3536 Carolina Beach Rd. Wilmington, NC) I started working as a server responsible for taking orders, making sure orders were accurate and acceptable, and restocking condiments and cleaning at the end of the shift. I eventually picked up shifts as a host responsible for keeping the cash register accurate and making sure that the customer’s needs were met. I also worked as a line cook for the last year I was there. I was responsible for making sure that the proper items were up at the right time so that the plate setter could have the meals ready for the servers in a timely manner and that the food was hot. Pro Shop Attendant (8/15/02 – 5/1/03) White Sands Golf Course (4723 US Highway 701 N, Elizabethtown, NC 28337) I worked part time as the Pro Shop Attendant. I was responsible for opening and closing the Pro Shop, running the cash register, and making sure that golf carts were outside ready for customers. I was also responsible for stocking and pricing merchandise, cooking hot dogs, restocking snacks and drinks. I was laid off at the beginning of the summer of 2003 due to the golf courses financial problems. Website Designer (1/15/2001 – 4/30/01) Unique Web Designs(198 Timberlodge Village White Lake, NC) From January of 2001 to the end of April of 2001 I did freelance web design. I did one full website as well as the updating of several websites. I was responsible for updating the information on the web pages, changing color schemes and adding new layouts and designs. I became familiar with various computer programs such as MS Frontpage, Xara, and learned some basic HTML programming. Unfortunately business was slow and by the end of April I had to begin looking for more permanent work.
