TECHNICAL WRITER / ELECTRONICS Jack (John) McArdle OBJECTIVE: A career, full time or part time / temporary position in the Electronics field, as technical writer, engineering lab technician or production/QC technician. SKILLS: Familiar with Microsoft applications Word, Excel, Visual Basic 6.0, and PowerPoint. Certified electronics technician. A+ certified computer technician. MCSE training school graduate. EXPERIENCE: Racal Communications, Inc.: production test and calibration all types of tube and transistor HF receiving equipment. Borders Electronics: X-band and S-band engineering lab technician. Siemens: associate member of technical staff, engineering lab, digital circuitry for Telex systems. Also: engineering lab tech experience with differential transformers, dumb VDTs, op-amps. RCA/GE: operation and maintenance manuals for DoD communications systems (secret clearance), USPS mail handling equipment, shipboard phone systems. Also: exclusively contracted to write seven manuals for US Air Force systems test equipment; exclusively contracted to write oil-refinery engineer training manual for Mobile Oil. EDUCATION: Haddon Heights High, NJ. High School Equivalency US Naval Fleet Sonar School, Key West, FL. Served thirty-nine months active duty US Navy – Honorably Discharged. Capital Institute of Technology, Washington, DC, math, English. Camden County College, Blackwood, NJ. computer programming courses C, C++, Visual C++, Visual Basic. Training Works, Inc.: levels I, II and III in Access/Excel/Word. Technical Writing Sample Jack McArdle This is a sample of my technical writing skills, composed of brief samples from some of the publications I have produced individually and independently, and for which I received very generous remuneration. Despite the fact that I have no college degree, it is my firm conviction that, in my prime I was absolutely, positively the very best technical writer in the entire world. The reason I never took the time to acquire a degree was simply because there never before seemed to be a need for one, as I achieved the rank of a full-fledged electronics engineer without one. The first sample is from a proposal I wrote for a printing company that was bidding on a contract for bulk mail services for the United States Postal Service. 2.2.5 ICR WORK STATION The data from the scanner is input to the ICR work station, which is programmed to verify that the running heads, start of text, text end, and page numbers are all correct (see Figure 2-2). Online software manipulates the text between the “start” and “end” so that it all fits properly into the text area, and that the line spacing and margin justifications are correct. In addition, various attributes are automatically inserted. For example, whenever the word “FIGURE” is followed by Arabic numeral(s), the system recognizes this as a specific figure reference and ensures that the word is stored as all caps. My second sample is from a petroleum engineering training manual I wrote for Mobile: 1-1 DEFINITION OF DISTILLATION The simplest definition for distillation is the physical separation of two or more components from a mixture, based on the different boiling point temperatures of the components. Distillation of crude oil is the physical separation (fractionation) of crude oil into a desired number of usable products. 1-2 DEFINITION OF CRUDE OIL Crude oil, as it is removed form the earth, is a mixture of many thousands of components. These range (in molecular weight) from C1’s and C2’s, which boil at approximately -43°F, through large molecular chain asphaltene compounds, that boil in the range of 1,500° to 2,000°+F. FIGURE 1-1 is a Crude Distillation Curve. This is a representation of the volume percent of the materials contained in typical crude stock verses the component boiling point. Components might include C5’s, which boil at approximately 100°F, to 330°F. The curve continues on into the higher boiling point kerosene’s, gas oils, and vacuum gas oils. Although, as an electronics engineer I rarely actually produced any original designs, I was expert at troubleshooting and correcting flawed existing designs. I was also very good at reverse engineering. I feel I have the ability to analyze a complex subject (such as digital logic and assembly language programs) and explain it in easy to understand terms. As an example of my writing skills, I will present an old fashioned, transistorized, regulated power supply. One of my favorite subjects when I was first getting started, and one that I was very good at producing original designs – that worked. Since it been about twenty-five years since the last time I did this, my design here may be extremely flawed, the object is to demonstrate my writing ability, which is a permanent skill, while skilled circuit design needs constant practice.

It was built using ASP and COM utilizing the classic Windows DNA 3 tier design with SQL Server 2000. The software captures documents though custom scanning software, email, and by interacting with the company’s fax server. Having access to search, index and share these documents through the web radically improved performance and accuracy of handling prescriptions, bills, invoices, etc. Every developed system has been integrated with this system to provide document management. • Using ASP.Net, VB.Net & C#, I created an interactive web portal for CCP. The portal integrates with Great Plains’ Solomon Financial System, the Goldmine CRM System, our own custom pharmacy quality assurance software and the Crystal Enterprise Suite. The portal offers a central location for staff to monitor all of the company’s workflow, whether it was customer service performance indicators or financial information. This was the focal point of the company’s EAI development. • With Biztalk Server, XML, ASP.Net, VB.Net & C#, I have built a B2B web portal allowing CCP’s business partners to submit and receive information from various different internal systems. The main purpose of this portal was to interpret XML data from outside sources and integrate that information into numerous legacy systems. • I Designed and implemented a custom pharmacy application to control quality assurance of compounded C2 pain management infusion drugs. The software has dramatically increased production as well as increased the quality of process. Using barcode scanning and smart tags the software provides for order entry, workflow processing, allergy and drug interaction as well as quality control. • CCP has a unique J2EE nuclear medicine information system completely designed and developed by myself which provides much of the same abilities as mentioned above for the pain management system. This product is totally web based using JSP, Servlets, XML, XSL, XSLT, & EJB. One of the best features of this product is its capability to store nuclear inventory as well as govern the preparation for nuclear drug prescriptions. • All internally developed systems and customizations utilize SQL Server 2000. Every system has been designed from the data layer taking in account for scalability and performance. I was responsible for all maintenance and data model design. Using SQL Server 2000 I created databases, tables, views, stored procedures, triggers and indexes. Titan Data Corporation Clearwater, FL Lead Developer / Systems Architect 3/2001 - 8/2001 • I managed a small team of six developers and support personnel. • I designed, developed and implemented a web enabled document management suite. This product used ASP, C++, VB & COM / DCOM in a multi-tier environment following the Windows DNA architecture. I was also solely responsible for creating all imaging software necessary for the product. • This product branched into other smaller custom workflow and automation packages per customer using VB, C++, ASP, Java, and J2EE. • All software was built to work with SQL Server 2000 or Oracle. AOL Time Warner Tampa, FL Senior Programmer Analyst 9/1999 - 3/2001 • I managed my own projects from design to implementation. • Most projects were for internal staff using VC++, VJ++, VB, & SQL. • I was solely responsible for all J2EE development – which encompassed three large, full scale applications using JSP, Servlets, and EJBs with WebLogic. • I was also the designated developer for all mobile and wireless applications. I built two applications for use on Pocket PCs using VCE & VBE with SQL & XML. The SSI Group, Inc. Tampa, FL Senior Programmer Analyst 6/1998 - 9/1999 • I developed claims management web software using ASP, VB, VC++, MS SQL, Oracle, & DB2. This software used distributed architecture similar to Windows DNA. • I was a team leader, responsible for five developers. Robbins Engineering Tampa, FL Programmer 9/1996 - 6/1998 • I was part of a small team of developers developing structural engineering software. • This product was used by home developers to design blueprints. The product offered a very rich CAD interface for design and made all the necessary computations for structural integrity. The software was completely built in VC++.
