Early in my career I wrote a short story for a small newspaper contest and won first place. That got me seriously looking at writing as a career. I worked at this same paper, The Coast Mountain News as production assistant for a short while. Moving to a bigger centre in the Okanagan for my son's health, I continued to supply hard news articles to the paper throughout the Okanagan Mountain fire of 2003. Settling in Penticton I was asked to be a ghost writer on a large web writing project, giving me the chance to learn more about article writing and web reporting. As a travel writer I enjoyed seeing the hidden gems in BC. It really is "the Best Place on Earth". It was an amazing journey in expanding my writing experience, learning more about my own back yard and writing with a team. Consequently because of my love of writing, I have chosen freelance writing as a full time career. I have traveled around the world and while living in Switzerland for almost 5 amazing years I travelled adjoining countries extensively. I feel this experience is an asset I can bring into my writing. I am committed to providing informative and well-written articles on tight deadlines. My areas of expertise include: Canadian history, community research, hard news stories, fiction and more recently, home renovations on a budget. Ben completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media Arts at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia in the early 1990’s Majoring in Film Production. With a natural flare for Cinematography, he began shooting many of the other students’ films as well as directing and shooting his own productions. On completing his studies Ben worked as a Camera Assistant on various projects including network TV programs such as “The Jimeoin Show”, “Full Frontal”, and later “Survivor Africa”. Ben prides himself on his versatility as a DOP and enjoys a variety of different types of work that demand various disciplines; He’s now been working professionally as a freelance Cinematographer for more than 20 years and has put together a body of work that encompasses over 30 short films, three feature films, numerous music video’s, TV and web commercials, corporate and educational films, branded content, documentaries, fashion, as well as live music performance and events. Notable projects include being the DOP and Associate Producer of the independent feature film “Bigger Than Tina” which premiered at The Melbourne International Film Festival in 1998, and gained a national theatrical release with Palace Films in 1999. In 2001 he was the DOP on another independent Australian feature “The Sticks” and in 2006 was the DOP on the feature documentary “Dirty Three”, which premiered at The Melbourne International Film Festival in 2007. Ben has also shot music documentaries featuring artists such as “Missy Higgins”, “The Living End”, “The Meanies” and “Eskimo Joe”. He was also the DOP on live music DVD’s “The Grates” live at the Forum Theatre, “Band of Horses” live at the Corner Hotel and “The Dirty Three” live in Tokyo. In 2014/2015 Ben worked in Qatar on the Arabian Peninsula as a DOP for ‘Resolution Films’ on various projects including TVC’s, international TV segments, corporate films and documentaries. Working for Resolution he also travelled to Tanzania in East Africa where he successfully reached the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro (Africa’s highest mountain), while filming a promotional documentary featuring a group of university students involved in a leadership program sponsored by Maersk Oil. In January of 2018 Ben was the DOP on his third feature film “Rock Sugar” produced by ‘Matter Obscura Films’, which is currently in post-production. Ben has a passionate dedication to visual story telling and is constantly searching for a narrative thread in everything he shoots. He thrives on the collaborative nature of film and video making and is renowned for his ever-positive outlook. Ben is currently based in Melbourne Australia but loves traveling and has worked on projects in the USA, Europe, Africa, Japan, Indonesia, China, South Korea, New Zealand and the Middle East.
