My first job was at age 14. I was a window graphics painter and also worked daily for Hill Bros. Const. Co after football practice (10th grade to graduation). I then went to college where I majored in advertising/design and received first place awards in fine art (painting/sculpturing) as well as advertising/design. I then moved to Memphis where I worked hands on in the print and art departments of a major company (CHAMPION AWARD, Premier and Tri-State Trophy). I did this while attending night courses at Memphis Tech. As an employee of these businesses in the Memphis area, I learned more about my craft as well as how to effectively deal with customers. After marriage and moving back home to Mississippi, I worked for several years at Mid South Graphics, which was a chain of printing companies. As they gradually failed and are no longer in business, I had little other choices to support my wife and three children, while staying in this wonderful area to raise children, so I became an upholsterer while developing my freelance business. I'm a digital sci-fi/fantasy/horror illustrator. I've been in this genre as an artist since my first magazine cover for Analog Sept 1998. I started working in digital as soon as Win98 came out. Since working in digital, I've developed a method that allows me to bypass the 'sketch stage - which I feel forces my clients to have to 'imagine' what the final will look like, and instead present a full color illustration as your first sketch, anticipating that changes will be requested, anywhere from major overhauls to simple fine tuning. So while my workflow may seem unorthodox when I send you full color illustrations as a first sketch, rest assured that it doesn't necessarily mean it's done (unless it's exactly what you wanted of course). I normally transfer all rights to my clients if the idea isn't mine, and my finals are poster size at a quality printable 300 pixels per inch, just in case you need to make promotional posters. Frequent feedback during the creative process is always welcome.
