I have worked in print publication (newspaper and magazine) for a combined 7 years of experience, and I've spent the last 6 years in non-profit public relations. Therefore, I have a diverse skill set that can take a publication from concept to completed product. Not only do I have substantial writing and editing experience, but I also have graphic design/ page layout skills. SPECIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Earned vast experience in graphic design and newspaper and magazine production using a number of desktop publication programs, i.e. Adobe Pagemaker, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe In-Design and Microsoft Word.
• Built the Mobile Entertainment Guide from conceptual stage through publication phase as editor-in-chief in charge of planning, assignments, writing, editing, graphic design and composition.
• At the Call News, designed the weekly sports section, A section and Op/Ed section from the template phase, including the production of all copy, photography, editing and graphic design.
• Mastered electronic publication and writing skills in order to produce a weekly award-winning newspaper serving north Mobile and Washington counties.
• Employed both digital and conventional photography in order to capture sports photos, news photos and feature photos for publication.
• Managed staff writers and freelancers by assigning stories to writers, creating unique story ideas, editing submitted copy and managing news coverage according to readership survey statistics.
• Coordinated advertising campaigns and special section publications to promote various events and governmental programs, including the development of graphic design concepts and advertising copy writing.
• Built Alabama’s best Class D weekly newspaper in first three years as editor of the Call News, as evidenced by the Alabama Press Association 2002 Better Newspaper Contest General Excellence Award.
• Served as the spokesperson and primary liason for both the Call News and Mobile Entertainment Guide in dealing with the public and corporate sectors. Duties included numerous public speaking engagements for civic and political organizations as well as the coordination of public image campaigns.
• As Senior Communications Specialist, charged with building and maintaining the reputation of the American Red Cross within the Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region. Duties include education of sponsor groups/ community organizations; development and implementation of competitive strategy for the ALGC in dealing with numerous competitors operating within the region; taking advantage of public speaking engagements to educate the public about the constant need for blood donation; creation and distribution of written communications and messaging for the region; building and maintaining strong relationships with the media; implementation of promotional campaigns to increase donor participation; dissemination of knowledge and information to American Red Cross staff; creating inter-organizational communication tools such as newsletters, fact sheets, etc.; developing advertising and communications strategies for working with partner hospitals within the ALGC region; worked to develop successful internal morale and public relations campaign to push ALGC staff to attain historic “12-for-12” monthly collections record in FY07.

• Won over 30 individual Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest awards between 2000 and 2004, including nine first place awards, seven second place awards and nine third place awards for writing, organization, photography, headline writing and graphic design.
• Won a first place American Cancer Society Regional Award in 2000 for the series, “Living with Cancer” and two first place American Cancer Society Regional Awards in 2003 for the “Living with Cancer” series.
• Won a third place award for Best Agricultural Story in the 2000 National Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest, in addition to an honorable mention award in the Best Business Story category.
