Art and Design is work. It takes time, education, and resources. And it’s how I make my living - and I can’t afford to do it for free.
The skill sets acquired by artists is expensive and needs to be compensated. Artist compensation also includes the invested time communicating with clients, preparing for client project and the time spent on the project.
Additionally, artists are self-employed - they don't get paid vacation or sick days, or incentive bonuses. They don't get have insurance plans or qualify for unemployment. We must calculate that into our rates - and that is why self-employed artists charge a higher rate for services - especially if they offer quality over quantity in their product.
