MA in International Business and Languages (German) 2.1

My degree programme integrated both the study of the German language and international business. As a result, I have a Masters Degree in both fields.

Throughout the course I studied various business-related subjects such as Management, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Human Resource Management and Marketing.

The study of the German language focussed mainly on technical and business German in order to complement the international business section of the course. I was trained specifically in the fields of translation and interpretation for business. In my third year I spent two semesters at the University of Augsburg in Germany studying a range of business subjects with instruction in the German language.

Work Experience

Sep 2006 – Apr 2010 & Sep 2010 - present day

Freelance English teacher in Augsburg, Germany

I have been teaching English at the Berlitz Language School in Augsburg, Germany since September 2006. This job requires me to teach the English language to complete beginners, intermediate and also advanced students.

The majority of my classes take place at companies in the Augsburg area where I am often required to teach Business English. This enables me to make use of the knowledge and skills I adopted during my university years. I have taught classes at many international companies including MAN, Renk, Finnforest, Surteco, GEDA and Bosch-Siemens.

In my time in Germany I have also taught young children between the ages of 7 and 13 and also helped teenagers prepare for the high school exams.

Teaching people my native language gives me great pleasure as it demands a lot of patience, understanding, discipline and preparation from the teacher; qualities I would count among my strengths. I love interaction with people and helping people to achieve their goals. I am a firm believer in the benefits of creating a relaxed and positive atmosphere in the classroom so as to enable the students to express themselves in a natural environment. Therefore, I invest time in developing a rapport with the students by showing enthusiasm and passion for their progress in English and the language itself.

Jun 2010 – Aug 2010

Summer School Teacher at the Edinburgh School of English, United Kingdom

In the summer of 2010 I spent two months teaching teenagers from all over Europe for the Edinburgh School of English in order to gain more experience teaching young people.

I had the opportunity to teach both intermediate and advanced students and also take groups of up to 20 children on excursions around the city of Edinburgh.

Languages. The study of language, the history of languages and their intrinsic role in modern society are topics that interest me greatly. This has led me to learn the German language to a high level, develop a keen interest in the workings of the English language and also pick up basic Spanish and Italian. My love of languages has also furthered my interest in travel. I believe that the willingness to learn about the foundations and day-to-day workings of foreign cultures is the key to promoting international cooperation and maintaining peace.

Music. My other great passion is music. I play guitar in my free time and I have also been a member in a band which allowed me to express my creativity in a structured way. I also love listening to a wide range of music.

Sport. Team sports and individual sports have always played a very important role in my life. I have played football, badminton, hockey and squash. When I was a teenager I was a member of the Scottish under-18 hockey training squad. I strongly believe that a healthy body is the key to a stable and focussed mind and for this reason I go to the gym and take part in yoga on a regular basis. My involvement in team sports over the years has contributed to my ability to operate as part of a team and, in turn, appreciate the synergistic quality of teamwork.

Languages. Fluent German, basic knowledge of Italian and Spanish.
Computing. I can use all word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation and internet browser computer programs. I am also a competent HTML, CSS and Joomla programmer.
Translation. I am a translator from German to English. I adopted these skills while studying at university and I have carried out some freelance translation work over the past three years.
Driving Licence. I have held a driving licence for 8 years and my record is clean.
