Artist's Statement:

I was born in Colorado and lived there until I felt it was time for me to go and explore my future. I began traveling at 16. I moved into a city or country until I established a profession, an existence, a story there. Once life became habitual, it would be time to seek a new part of my self, and I would abandon everything to begin anew. I participated in this nomad life, writing all the details of it, until I began my family, and in 1999, settled down in rural—beautiful!—West Virginia.

Art for me continues to be a way to journey and learn about pieces of my hidden self. I have been involved in the arts my whole life. I have been a writer, a jewelry designer, a sculptor, a stained glass artist and a potter, yet I have not been able to maintain a long term rapport with any medium until I began my relationship with photography. Photography is very intuitive for me. Ever since I picked up a camera I have treated it as a means of articulation, and I have been confident that it is what I would do with my life.

As an artist I enjoy the foreplay of creating. When initiating art in the past I’ve only been capable of addressing one or two ideas at a time, but through photography I am able to indulge hundreds of intentions in a short period. I love the immediacy of this medium. I also love that photography is a business of light; it is literally composing using luminescence as ones tool. There is no secret that “light” is the term used by many spiritual paths to define what is pure and divine. It is an honor spending my moments chasing such divinity.

In this regard photography has become not just an expression, but a form of worship. It is seeing what is miraculous and sacred in life, and then sharing these evoked sensations with others through visual poetry. Substantiating with imagery is a way to communicate and point out this awesome world for others to notice and realize. As a photographer I can be an artist that isn’t just the inventor but the receiver of creation, and who interacts with this art daily. This is why I view photography simultaneously as prayer and revelry. Transcendence through imagery abounds in each moment. It’s just a matter of acknowledging this and opening ones heart to the receiving of it.
