Thesis: Harriet Prescott Spofford: The Forgotten Feminist
Spofford’s work in the late nineteenth century re-examined the binary categories of women: the
domestic angel and the dark, sensual woman. By juxtaposing and blurring the lines of feminine

rejected by male critics and admired by the consumers who read female domestic fiction.
