Engineering experience

Mechanical Engineer – RM Shedlock & Associates

August 2006 - present
• Structural design of a number diverse of structures including:
? Four storey food process plant – the design included Prokon 2nd order analysis, interfaces to accommodate mechanical equipment, frequent site inspections, foundation design (including piling, ground beams etc)
? Various warehouses with large span roofs, including design of lattice girders, cell beams, fixed or pinned columns etc
? Furnace buildings, furnace shells (designed using FEA methods), building modifications etc for large industrial clients in the steel producing industry – includes procedures for structural modifications and repairs with temporary support of equipment weighing over 200 tons and building upgrades with plant operational i.e. procedures to minimize impact on production
? Design and repair of pipe gantries including routing of piping, braced bays, pipe supports, allowance for thermal expansion of pipes
? Design of offshore gas off-take stacks for mobile oil rigs – stacks run at 450°C with high wind loads
? Connection design related to Medupi power station – design of connections with loads of over 12000kN – designs to include full sizing specification (bolts, plate sizes, welding etc), connection arrangement, welding and testing specification

• Design, documentation and project management of ?15 export busbar projects for the Taiwan and Japanese markets. This included technical design, project documentation and project management (project plans, quality plans, shipping documents and export documentation). Java Developer – Discovery Health
April 2004 - July 2006
• Development relating to the Discovery website. Major projects included development of Bill Statement functionality (as team lead), systems analysis, design and development for data confidentiality (senior developer on a team of +- 25 people), development of Billing Administration functionality in a small team of 4 developers. These roles required an in-depth understanding of the financial aspects relating to employer billing within Discovery, as well as administrator functions and member interactions.

• Development of a number of online modules for an international HR and employee benefits application, using leading edge Java technologies (at the time)
• Development of an event based Process Scheduling system for a major South African bank for their short term insurance division – the system fundamentally transformed their manual system and automated all processes relating to capturing and processing claims
