As a teaching assistant in Exeter’s Department of English I successfully planned and taught seminars in English literature at the undergraduate level on the first-year module Past & Present 1. I completed the first phase of training in year one of PhD studies which involved becoming acquainted with seminar moderation and grading on the module, followed by the second phase in year two of my studies which consisted of running the fourteen-week seminar on my own. I held office hours weekly in order to address students’ individual concerns with writing, course load and assignments, and assisted in proof-reading, along with the required duties of evaluating and grading undergraduate work.
Awards
In Autumn 2004 I was awarded the prestigious Renaissance Scholarship by the University of Exeter on the basis of the potential recognized in my application for making a positive contribution to the University of Exeter’s rising status as one of the UK’s premier research institutions (ranked 15th in the UK for research out of 159 higher education institutions according the 2008 RAE rating, and recently scored 9th in The Times league table). The scholarship guaranteed both full funding for PhD studies and a position in the teaching assistantship programme.
Extracurricular Achievements
One of my most exciting personal achievements outside of academia was having, in 2008, a short story entitled “The Deer Head” published in Succour: The New Fiction, Poetry and Art, ed. Anthony Banks, Spring/Summer 2008 (16-18).

In addition to learning and grappling with often complex data systems, working at the tourism board offered a great opportunity to be a part of a research institution outside of the university, one with specific business objectives to meet and in which there was expectation to perform – with little margin of error – under the pressure of strict deadlines.
