Experience: (7+ Years)
Freelance Design Support, Denver, CO. April 2010-Present
Graphic Design, Consultation, Concept to Completion Production. Using Adobe CS5 (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) to create logos, web banners, product images, direct mail and print advertising. Aside from industry knowledge and self-motivation, customer service is my most valuable skill as a freelance designer. I am dedicated to helping each client identify their specific needs and delivering a unique toolset that displays a personal connection to their business.
The Sports Authority, Englewood, CO. August 2006-April 2010
Graphic Design, Production, Small Team Leadership. Using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Cumulus to produce pages with studio photography and traffic driving copy for weekly print advertising. With cross department collaboration I produced inserts, broad sheets and wraps with timely accuracy to be printed in 40 markets across the country. I built templates and page files with respect to style guides and optimized the use of layers, styles, swatches and libraries. I provided multiple layout solutions while incorporating heavy content from the marketing and traffic teams in addition to verifying accuracy with the copy proofing teams. I developed excellent prioritizing and process troubleshooting skills while adapting to changing work flow and achieving production milestones in a fast paced environment. My leadership experience comes from delegating work and communicating new initiatives to our small team to fill a vacancy prior to departmental restructuring.
eToys Direct, Denver, CO. April 2006-August 2006 Contract
Graphic Design, Production. I assisted in the creation of the Sears Wishbook, eToys Direct, and My Twinn catalogs using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. We developed spreads with templates, libraries, layers and styles that supported the vision of the creative director and goals of the merchant team. The scope of this contract also included image production with color correction, clipping paths, and montages to get the most mileage from the studio photography.
CarlaNiehaus.etsy.com, Carla Niehaus Fine Art, Avon, CT. October 2005 – August 2010
Freelance Graphic Design. The scope of this project included identity, direct mail, and art direction for product photography. The client needed visual tools that could be self-edited in the future. Along with continued advice and the logo that I designed, this client is successfully maintaining a website, selecting print vendors and sending out direct mail.
Martz Supply Company, Arvada, CO. October 2004-October 2005
Graphic Design, Production. I provided print design support to the showroom by developing and producing a quality control book for each customer. The spec book program doubled as a customer loyalty and marketing tool. I designed the "submittal book" system to be quickly produced and customized according to each clients' product selections. I also created several logos to be used in the company's up-coming web store. And finally, I created and produced 2 phases of direct mail for Martz's yearly promotional Earn-Your-Way Trip to Fiji. The initial announcement mailer prompted a 30% response within 2 weeks. The direct mail campaign assisted in making the Fiji trip the most successful program of its kind in company history by way of customer participation.
Wilkinson Showroom, Raleigh, NC. February 2003-October 2004
Graphic Design, Production. I supported the showroom sales team by designing and producing promotional print material. I used Adobe products to create brochures, business cards, special announcements, magazine advertisements, fliers, and product specification material. I shot digital photography of the high-end kitchen and bath showroom displays, color corrected, and optimized images for use in print materials. Additional responsibilities included being the point person to coordinate the magazine ad, copy writing, editing, proofing and web banners.
Homes and Land Magazine, Raleigh, NC. 1999-2000, July 2002-January 2003
Graphic Design, Production. I assisted in the design and production of Homes and Land Magazine, and Pinehurst Magazine. I designed page and ad layouts using Quark Xpress and Adobe Illustrator to the editor and external client specifications with respect to print vendor production deadlines.
IBM developerWorks, RTP, NC. June 2000- September 2001
Visual Design Co-op. Under the creative director and art director I used Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create illustrations and technical diagrams. My team provided visual design support for a developer resource web site. I also accommodated illustration requests for projects that served international audiences in Japan, China, and India. I gained a great benefit from this first experience as a designer in a corporate structure. I learned how a visual designer contributes to the product development process.
My artistic interests are ever evolving and currently include: hand-pulled linocut prints, monoprints (HammerandCoil.com), mixed-media painting, drawing, landscape photography, and miniature raku fired ceramic sculpture. I also enjoy outdoor activities including, but not limited to: camping, off-roading, snowboarding and hiking. I also contribute to the ASPCA and strive to continue creating an earth-friendly lifestyle.
