I earned my master’s degree in Liberal Studies at The
University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In addition, I have an
undergraduate degree in Journalism from San Jose State University.
While employed as a newspaper reporter, I worked at several major
metropolitan publications including Newsday, The Oakland Tribune and
The Charlotte Observer. My work in journalism has garnered awards from
journalism associations including The North Carolina Press Association,
The Associated Press, The National Association of Black Journalists and
The Northern California Press Association.
The most noted accolade of my career came at The Charlotte Observer
where I was one of the lead reporters for the newspapers “Taking Back
Our Neighborhoods” series which explored crime and poverty in
Charlotte’s central city. The project was a 1995 Pulitzer Prize
finalist and has been used as a model at other publications.
I spent four years as an experienced Public Information Officer in the
United States Air Force and wrote press releases and answered press
queries. I held the same position in the U.S. Army National guard for
two years. I was honorably discharged.
