Teacher – Spanish 2002-2005

Spanish for Native Speakers (3 years) Levels 1 and 2. Class geared specifically for Heritage Speakers. Emphasis on perfecting reading and writing skills through the study of literature. Instruction included fundamentals of Spanish Grammar, cultural awareness, and a survey of Spanish/Latin American literature. Adapted the Jane Schaffer Method to Spanish in order to teach students the fundamentals of correct essay writing.

AP Spanish Language (2 years). Emphasis on preparing students for the AP Spanish Language examination. Focused primarily on an intense study of Latin American authors to perfect writing skills and to develop a cultural awareness. Heavy emphasis on the conventions of written language; including spelling, punctuation, and the use of accents.

AP Spanish Literature (2 years) Emphasis on preparing students for the AP Spanish Literature examination. A survey of 34 Spanish/Latin American authors and their works; including novels, short stories, essays, and poetry. Taught students literary terms and methods for analyzing literary works; looking for symbolism, metaphor, magical realism, and social commentary. Heavy emphasis on the writing of analytical and comparative essays.

Member of textbook adoption committee (2003). Piloted and examined textbooks from various publishers. Provided written and oral evaluations as to the merits of each text. Made final decision to adopt Realidades levels 1-3.

Assisted in curriculum development (Spanish 1 and 2). Suggested text for each level, pacing of instruction, and assessments.

Assisted in translating District Handbook (English to Spanish). Working with the Director for Secondary Education, translated several dozen pages of the district handbook which provides parents with an overview of district policies and procedures.

Taught summer school—Summer 2004. Taught Spanish for Native Speakers Level 1.
