Working career
2006 to date: Freelance reporter/sub-editor/page designer/proofreader: clients have included the Halifax Courier, Bolton News, Manchester Evening News, Rugby League Express, Rochdale Observer, Catlow Communications, Lancashire Business View, Todmorden News, Brighouse Echo, Hebden Bridge Times. Currently living aboard a barge near Nottingham.
December 2011: Casual Christmas employment for the Royal Mail at its Nottingham delivery office.
2003-2006: Deputy editor Manchester Metro News: responsible for sub-editing, page design and running newsdesk on 310,000 circulation weekly newspaper. Additionally used CMS to update newspaper website and wrote theatre and music reviews. Was one of 36 senior staff who took voluntary redundancy in 2006.
1997-2003: Deputy editor Rochdale Observer: Responsible for overseeing news and subs desks on bi-weekly paid-for newspaper.
1995-1997: Deputy editor Middleton and North Manchester Guardian: reporter and sub-editor on weekly paid-for newspaper.
1989-1995: Deputy sports editor Rochdale Observer: reporter, sub-editor and page designer specialising in rugby - union and league - motorsports and cricket.
1988-1989: Sports editor Romford Recorder: sub-editor/page designer and reporter specialising in non-league football, cricket and speedway.
1986-1988: Sports reports Thurrock Gazette: reporter specialising in non league football, cricket, speedway.
1983-1986: Reporter/sub-editor Gateshead Post: began as a junior reporter after leaving college and moved on to become a sub-editor/page designer for the Post series of free newspapers in County Durham.
