UNC-Wilmington beat writer at a 60,000-circulation New York Times
Regional Newsgroup daily newspaper. Primary duties include daily
coverage of the men's basketball team. Handled golf beat beginning in
2002. Duties consist of local tournament coverage, coordination of area
results and production of a weekly "Golf Focus" page. Assignments
included the U.S. Open, PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup as well
as a handful of regular PGA Tour stops. ACC beat writer from 2000-03.
Primary duties were coverage of men's basketball and football, including
NCAA Tournament and bowl games. Wrote two columns each week,
made regular radio show appearances and produced enterprise packages.
Was featured on ESPN's "The Life: Duke Basketball" (March, 2002) and
ABC's "NBA Inside Stuff" (Oct. 2004); secured rare one-on-one
interview with retired North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith (Feb.
2002); and toured football facilities of all nine ACC schools in eight
days (Aug. 2001). Covered several NASCAR races in the Carolinas;
produced four-page special section on the death of Dale Earnhardt as
well as a preseason insert. I won seven quarterly newsroom awards
during my final two years for writing, enterprise, beat coverage and
performance and was contributing writer for quarterly Wilmington
Magazine.
