Steven C. Harrell is a Registered Landscape Architect holding licensure in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. A 1980 graduate of Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree, Steve*s career has spanned over 31 years of professional practice. He has been associated with Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc, a large, multi-disciplined, international firm in St. Louis, Mo; the Brickman Group in Chicago, Illinois, and the SiteWorks Studio in Alabama which was one of six nationwide design studios with the award winning ValleyCrest Design Group. Steve also has over 18 years experience owning and managing his own firms in Mississippi and Alabama. His work has been recognized by local ASLA chapters in Mississippi and Illinois, and his projects have been featured in Southern Living Magazine and Mississippi Magazine.
Specializing in Landscape Architecture, Planning, and Site Design his work is guided by classic and traditional design principles that withstand the test of time. He believes the Landscape, Architecture and built elements should appropriately define the character, culture, habitat and history of the region while meeting the client*s needs, desires, and resources. Naval Air Station Historic Mitigation
$13 million landscape renovation in and surrounding the National Historic Landmark District at NAS Pensacola, FL. The design establishes a new seawall walkway that weavens together three new pedestrian plazas, ten seating node pavilions, comprehensive landscape enhancements and a historic interpretive trail celebrating the history and significance of NAS. Major design features included a Main Pavilion Plaza for ceremonial events, 10 seating node pavilions, a tensiled fabricsculpture feature anchoring a significatnt plaza, monument markers, salvaged artifacts display areas, a salvaged 130 foot smoke stack feature remnant from a razed historic building, a monumental arch recalling a former historic building that once occupied a prominent site, a special compass rose granite medallion design, dark sky and turtle friendly site lighting, extensive special paving design, site furnishings, and major landscape restoration plantings.
180 acre mixed use PUD in Gulf Shores, AL
Master Plan design development phase one using TND design principals. Provided design development concept documents, construction documents, and construction administration services for all site amenities inclufding common areas, main entrances, traffic circle features, and clubhouse architectural features such as a pool house, pavilion, zero entry pool, hardscaping, planting, and lighting.
Whitehouse Creek Plantation
1200 acre master planned mixed use residential development in Spanish Fort, AL. Provided Master Planning Services for entire site and design development documents, construction documents, and construction administration for Phase One which included the main entrance terraced water feature, a wheelhouse, faux bridge, hardscaping, landscaping, lighting, and signage.
Expansion to an existing high end Micxed Use Commerecial Retail Development in Destin, FL. Provided design development, construction documents, county permitting and maitigation documentation services. Site amenities and streetscape design included all major venue courtyards, and plazas, special pedestrian gathering areas, extensive hardscape an;d paving designs, a rooftop pool courtyard for a jajor Hotel, site furnishings, and comprehensive planting design. Corrdinated and intergrated ddesigns with other team constultants which included Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers, Lighting Engineers, Architects, Signage Experts, Client representaties, and municipal authorities.
Biloxi High School
Courtyard design for new expansion to existing High School in Biloxi, MS. Provided design development and construction documentation services for new courtyard to be used by students and the extended community. Amenities included major plazas, custom tensiled fabric structures, character pillar monuments, art display walls, special feature seating walls, bold and symbolic paving designs, plannting, irrigation and lighting.
Gated golf course and residential development in West Point, MS. Provided design, construction documents, and construction administration services for all site features. Amenities included a main entrance with iconic gate house, pro shop and cart storage plazas, site planning and hardscaping package, a one-way vehicular bridge feature with waterfall and speicial stonework, stylised cart bridges throughout the golf course, and comprehensive hardscaping and planting design.
Upscale 175 lot waterfront residential community in Brandin, MS. Provided master planning, design development, construction documents, and construction administration services. Amenities included a main entrance with an iconic gate house feature, secondary entrances throughout the devlelopment to identify sub-neighborhoods, clubhouse amenities package which featured a custom pool, paved terraces, ornamental fencing and walls, boat dock, lush planting and special lighting. (Joint ventured with Tom Bobbitt, Landscape Architect)
Gated residential community in Madison, MS. Provided full services; master plan, design development, construction documentation and construction administration. Main entrance featured ornamental vehicle gates, iconic guard house building, architectural walls, fountain feature, landscaping, signage and lighting. Clubhouse package included a custom pool, fountain, special paving, fencing, landscaping and lighting.
Elvis Presley Birthplace Museum
Renovation to Elvis Presley Birthplace Museum in Tupelo, MS. Scope of work included long range master planning, Architectural modifications to existing museum building entrance, preservation of existing birth place building, comprehensive revamp of museum site and amenities features. Featured new walks with interpretive signage and granite paving markers, a customo and symbolic water fountain feature, walls foe artifacts display or informative graphics, a car display pavilion plaza, bollards, seat walls, steps, railings, parking, landscaping, lighting, and site furnishings.
