I am a teacher with seventeen years experience. I have an A level (grade A) in English Literature and a degree in Physics. My professional qualification is a PGCE in secondary science teaching. I did teach Chemistry for a year at secondary level, but then switched to primary. All this, together with a good knowledge of IT and wide reading in English and American Literature has furnished me with a good background in decoding a wide range of texts and an appreciation of style, register and special vocabularies.
My reading has covered adult and children's fiction, academic and popular science, school textbooks and history. Also, I have a good reading knowledge of French.
So far I have only proofread/copy edited on an amateur basis. Years ago I edited an academic work for a friend and found it thoroughly enjoyable and an absorbing challenge . However at that time I thought the opportunities for doing this work professionally were small. The growth of the internet and exposure to the documentation associated with my profession and others have made me aware of how much badly edited writing is in the public domain.
So I think now might be the time for me to look for employment in this sector.
I would very much appreciate any opportunity you could offer me as a first step towards becoming a professional copy editor.
