Artist/Tutor specialising in figurative and portraiture art work in various mediums including Acrylics and oils. Some art work can be viewed on at facebook.com/soulexpose while website is about to be updated. Resume: I am a local artist with extensive experience of working with children, youth and an older age group for community groups. I recently finished facilitating “Confluence The Three Rivers Project” comprising groups from Sion Mills, Castlefin and Lifford. This community project researched local history and imagery and concluded in an exhibition of future visions for the river areas involved. The exhibition was held in the newly refurbished old stable area in Sion Mills in early July. The Strabane Chronicle and The Strabane Weekly News covered the event.
I have facilitated groups in Belfast, Holywood, Castlederg, Strabane, Letterkenny and Lifford. Sion Mills features in my recent work as there is a sculpture by me located there, which was well received by the local press. “Abridged” is a publication by the arts council the February issue of which contains a photograph by me of the Sion Mills engine room (page 47). I have been commissioned by numerous public bodies to execute large-scale murals involving all age groups and cross border community initiatives.

Youth Club Murals 2005
The challenge was to ignite the youth interest in 2 different youth clubs to produce 4 large scale murals. Work evolved over 4 months and involved visual research by young and older attendees identifying local heroes and landmarks to pool an assortment of imagery. This was distilled to 4 works and celebrated the life of a youth club for Melvin Hall and the Sam Maguire Cup won by Tyrone for the Ballycolman Hall. In addition all participants created many personal artworks during the process of creating the murals. 2 murals were by me, the other two were executed by the participants under my guidance. The Client was Strabane District Council.
Border Arts 2000 – Castlederg & Stranorlar
I was chosen to facilitate two towns in the research, execution and development of two large scale murals, that celebrated uniqueness of place. Work was carried on in the respective towns and involved a series of night class facilitation in visual research. On completion of the murals both artists and communities met to exhibit and celebrate the results of their efforts.
The Client was Gordon Speer acting for Border Arts 2000.
Upper Springfield Project – Belfast 1998
Working right on the peace line divide between two communities in strife, my task was to facilitate Catholic and Protestant Groups to jointly create a vast wall mural for their community hall. Subject matter was tricky but eventually popular themes were agreed on. Belfast humour “saved the day” yet again. The resultant imagery included classic Belfast black city cabs animated with Simpson cartoon characters. Despite initial reticence from the participants, the endeavour to enhance their community hall fostered cooperation and enjoyment for all.
1. Weekly Art classes to local community hub in Castlefinn. Ongoing.
Artist’s Statement
Since attending art college in 1976 (University of Ulster), I have persisted on my visual journey. Linking myself to the ‘Romantics’ I have referenced the language of Dylan Thomas, and Yeats and my own poetry as a catalyst for much of my work. The ongoing conscious and subconscious dialogues and dilemma of one’s mortality and the human condition drive much of my art-making. For me, dreams, poetry and music are pointers to the invisible world of the spirit inspiring and informing a visual dialogue. Artistic maturity has involved me on a diversity of artistic exploration, embracing conceptual thinking through a variety of mediums. Experimenting and exhibiting through photographic narrative installation and performance art along with poetry is key to my artistic practice. Prevailing themes continue to inform my visual response to the tangible and unseen world. Anxiety is resulting from media saturation, and subsequent alienation. The malaise and resulting chaos of society’s reliance on addictive substances are concerns that find their way into my work. Then the task is to use the most appropriate medium to best convey that response. The human spirit conveyed in the portraiture is my other passion. I strive to capture the inner state as opposed to what the sitter presents. The intriguing phenomenon of human versus spirit pervades and fuels my thinking in art as in life.
