I have had a variety of work experiences in my professional life and have been lucky to be able to use my writing skills as both an educator and advocate for progressive change.
HIGHER EDUCATION WRITING: Prior to my current Denver Public Schools teaching job, I spent more than 3 years at the Community College of Denver as a faculty member, writer, and staff member. As part of FastStart, an innovative developmental education program, I wrote successful grant proposals, represented the Community College of Denver at national conferences for minority-serving institutions, and worked with a faculty team to develop the CCD Digital Storytelling Project.
GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING: My experience as a grant proposal writer began while finishing my work as a teacher at Littleton High School when I worked as an independent contractor to write grant proposals and research funding options for a variety of organizations. Here is a brief summary of this work:
• Mountain Vista High School Significant Needs Department: wrote successful grant proposal
• Highlands Ranch Community Association: wrote successful grant proposal for tennis program
• The Tropical Heights Institute: researched funding sources, wrote letters of inquiry
• Musana Children’s Home: researched funding sources, wrote letters of inquiry
TECHNICAL WRITING AND RESEARCH: Before beginning my education career, I worked for two years with the technical writer at an engineering firm and for six years as an advocate, writer, and researcher at the New York Public Interest Research Group.
