I am a qualified copy editor and proofreader with experience in a variety of formats including PDFs, websites, Word and hardcopy. I check everything from punctuation, grammar and consistency of UK/US English, to readability, style and structure for the intended reader.
My current clients include community newspapers, journalists and novelists. I am accustomed to working to deadlines and verifying data. Past clients include university students, website designers and fundraising campaigns. While I enjoy working as part of a team, I am equally happy to work independently.
At present I’m working on two websites, a resume and perfecting a client’s job applications.
August – October 2014 Substantive proofreading and editing of a 200-page PhD thesis. English is not the writer’s native language therefore clarity and intent needed close attention. The project included in-depth research of the subject matter, online locating and correction of references, creating the bibliography and appendices, reordering segments for better flow and formatting. The thesis comprises PDFs as well as Word documents.
December 2013 – present Copy-editor consultant on two authors’ manuscripts.
April 2013 – present Sub-editor for The Geraldine News: a weekly community newspaper, typically 12 pages. I proofread and copy edit four to 10 articles from six reporters, to meet the deadline. I check facts and ambiguities with the reporters, and report expected word lengths, subject matter and any issues, to the editors. http://geraldinenews.co.nz/
June 2013 Proofread and substantive editing of a website SA4X for editor and website designer Donni Hakanson of Independant Editing. I worked during the production phase.
May 2013 – present Sub-editor for The Temuka Telegraph: a monthly community newspaper, typically 34 pp, which primarily consists of business submissions and advertising. Owned and organised by one person, this paper was previously printed ‘as is’. To limit mistakes entering between copy editing and printing, I edit this paper as a PDF. http://www.temuka.net.nz/telegraph.html
September 2012 Complete structural overhaul of a short biography for use in fundraising. http://www.madisonmerrick.org.nz/MadieesStory.aspx
April 2012 – August 2013 NZIBS Student, graduating with a Dip Edit (merit).
