I earned my degree in Mass Communication at Lamar University in 1988. I have practical experience as a writer and reporter for the Orange Leader and Southwest Daily News in Louisiana. In Des Moines, Iowa, I was a free-lance writer for The Iowan magazine and The Des Moines Register. I have also done typesetting and clerical jobs.

Dear Sir or Madam:
I am ready, willing, and able to reenter the workforce and be an invaluable asset to your company.
The best way to describe my work history is chronological order, which will also show my backbone, and fortitude. My career in print journalism began for me in college at the University Press and Scene and Sound followed by the Beaumont Enterprise internships. This time period included a series of articles on the homeless published first for the Press and later in the Orange Leader along with their articles. The series won First Place in the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association for the Leader. Concern in the community from the articles caused a shelter to be opened in Orange.
I investigated series and issues most would not touch as a young cub reporter, many assigned to me, and handled it well for one so young at 21-years-old.
I took a brave risk again at 21, newly married, and fresh out of college in 1989 and grabbed a temporary position at the Southwest Daily News. With only two sources given, I found many other sources, did many fresh feature articles, helped in layout, design, and helped with rewrites for a 36-page tabloid on Lake Charles Contraband Days and an 84-page broadsheet for the City of Sulphur's 75th Anniversary. Based upon my performance, I was hired full-time and permanent with a pay increase as a news feature, investigative reporter who also covered hard, spot, and other news.
Before my relocation to Des Moines, Iowa, for my former spouse to study law, I had mostly self-taught and hands-on experience in desk top publishing using such programs as PageMaker. Before I moved to Des Moines, I had established contacts and sources via The Writer's Market. When I arrived, therefore, I was able to hit the ground running as I freelanced for The Iowan and Des Moines Register.
When I arrived in Houston from Iowa, I signed up mostly with temp agencies and gained more experience as an Administrative Assistant which began in Des Moines at Drake University.
Should you hire me, I would be an asset to your company with fresh eyes and a professional and personal background that I could show you how it could work for you in an interview. I thank you for your time and acceptance of my resume, and await your reply.
Very Truly Yours,
Leah C. Russell
