I grew up in a small town in North Carolina. I started drawing at a young age, from the first time I was able to hold a pencil. I didn't pick up painting until my late teens. And have been at it ever since. I'm completely self-taught. Oil is my medium of choice because it seems traditional, the stuff the masters used. I also love the smell. When at a gallery, admiring the art, I'm drawn to the oil painting and I have a bad habit of touching the art, like I'm taking some of it with me.
At 33, I feel like I'm producing some of the most interesting stuff I've ever done. My style continues to change as I learn new techniques and perfect old ones. In my Trust Series, I cropped the images drastically to focus on the differing skin tones or how the skin folds. Color is one of the elements I love to manipulate. In my new work, I've been dividing a single image into two or three different color schemes in order to see how that can changes the mood of the painting.
I have a very direct approach to painting, I block in color and blend the tones. I feel it would be easy to learn. that will make it a fun and rewarding time for all.
