Throughout my studies art and design has always been my main interest. My foundation in art and design gave me access to a wide variety of different art forms, such as model making, graphic design, fine art and surface design. During the course I was able to experience each, working in a variety of different ways. It was during this year that I became certain my future was within the area of graphic arts and illustration. For my degree I was able to experience various sides of graphic arts, including typography, layout design, branding, illustration, and animation. I was also able to experience how graphic design works in relation to the advertising world.
During my degree I wrote my dissertation on the methods of animation and whether traditional methods still hold relevance with the technology of today. Through my research I gained a good understanding of the nature of animation and film making, and where it might be taken in the future.

-Vanessa Anstee (Freelance Client)
Whilst at University I had the opportunity to work on a number of live briefs, coming into contact with advertising agencies. In my first year of University I acted as a team leader for a live brief entitled “Jamie Oliver’s Good Food” set by William Murray Hamm. I then had the opportunity to work on a number of competition briefs during my time at university, including;
“Write and Illustrate a Children’s Book” – Macmillan
“Create a Disney Character” - DNAD
“James and the Giant Peach”- Penguin
During my final year at university I was able to visit New York, and a number of creative design agencies in the city, to get an idea of the way in which agencies will be approached by a client, and the various stages a project might go through. These included;
The Chopping Block
Brand New School
Saatchi & Saatchi X
After finishing university I began working as a full time caricature artist for Artistic Licence UK. During my time working there I came into contact with a variety of different people, from different backgrounds and of different ages on a daily basis. I was drawing up to 50 caricatures a day and therefore had to adapt to working at a fast and steady pace.
I have also undertook some work experience with Paul Mitchell Design, during my two weeks here I worked as part of a small team of Graphic Designers and was able to see how they interpret a brief from a client, working on some smaller projects, such as leaflet and flyer design, as well as some logo design. More recently I worked for a week as an Art Department Assistant on the film “Great Expectations” due for release in 2012. I worked with a small group of art assistants under the art director and I was shown how to read drawing elevations for set design, and given the chance to create my own set models from their designs. As well as this, I was able to watch filming, walk around the sets, and look at the storyboarding process.
