Native Iowan, Doug Knutson, brings to life his Midwest surroundings in his landscapes, still life and wildlife paintings. Even as a youngster growing up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Knutson knew he would devote his life to his artwork. Following graduation from Omaha Art School, he began his career as an illustrator in the Editorial Art Department of the Omaha World-Herald newspaper. After about 12 years at that position, Doug’s commercial art career took him to an Eastern Iowan illustration studio where he spent several years working for national clients.
Over the years he has completed illustrations for many clients including Abbey Press, Admiral, American Express, Apple Creek Publishing, Barton Beers, Bradford Exchange, Brown Publishing, Burger King, Christian Life Resources, Cracker Barrel, Concordia Publishing, Crossways Books, Ertl Racing Champions, Farmland, Flowerama of America, Focus on the Family, Franklin Mint, Gibson, Giftco, Group Publishing, Hampton Brown, Harcourt Brace, John Deere, K and Company, Kansas City Star, Kenmore, Leanin’ Tree, Longaburger, McDonald’s, Miles Kimball, McMillan-McGraw Hill Publishing, Missouri Lottery, Morgan-Cain & Assoc., Perfection Learning, Pocket Books, Purina, Quarasan, Random House, Rivertown Trading Co., Rodale Press, Scholastic, Scott Foresman, Texaco, and Zondervan Publishing. Illustrations have ranged from CD and video cases to children's books, cards, posters, labels, advertising materials and collectable tins and plates.
Upon becoming a freelance illustrator several years ago, the flexibility of time led Doug back to his love of nostalgia, antiques and rural life, and today there are over 75 acrylic paintings in print, inspired by his Midwestern surroundings.
Currently, Doug Knutson resides in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, balancing his time between illustration assignments and images for prints. His images may be viewed at www.dougknutsonillustration.com .
